“Good Place to Stay!”
Reviewed 19 May 2012

We booked on Priceline for what we think is a steal, and spent two weekend nights at this hotel. We loved our stay! When we arrived, the front desk staff was very warm and accomodating. We were upgraded to a riverfront room on the 14th floor because it's our anniversary! The lobby area is spectacular, elevators were quick and easy to find. The only drawback was the boring, in-need-of-some-upgrade hallways leading to the rooms. The room was fine, except we think all upscale hotels should have refrigerators in every room (and this one didn't). The view of the "blue bridge" was amazing! The hotel staff was very nice, front the doorman and concierge to the guy that brought us a pair of toothbrushes. Here's a tip if you're driving: If you're there on a weekend, you can avoid paying $15/nite for self-parking by parking on the street. There is no charge for the meters on the weekend (until 8:00 AM on Monday), and it was easy to find parking spots right near the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the river side of the hotel. Views are great!

Check in staff was nice. Bumped up to king bed with water view for free. Cab from airport was $40. Rooms are nice but not amazing. Will need a renovation in about 5 years (yes, they still have the box TVs), but for now, we are happy. If you have a view... Keep your eye out for dolphins.

I took my wonderful girlfriend for a 3-day birthday weekend (5/4-5/6). I reserved a balcony room overlooking the St. John's River and took advantage of the option to get it on the highest floor available. The view was fantastic. The service was impecable and the room was spacious and spotless. The staff is top notch. A bellman named Oliver was especially helpful and friendly. One of the best features of the hotel is the location. It's within walking distance to all kinds of dining and shopping at the Riverwalk, and the Times-Union Theater where we saw Les Mis'erables Saturday night.

Room Tip: Get a river view balcony room. You won't regret it.

My staff and I were involved in producing a week long event at the Hyatt Regency in March 2012. We were also guests in the hotel for the week. The hotel was very nice with lovely views of the river, especially at night. The location is good with a number of places to eat within easy walking distance. The hotel rooms were comfortable and clean.

The staff makes this hotel exceptional. When I travel for business I am typically traveling with a staff of 5-10 and need to check in multiple hotel rooms at once. This is often challenging but at the Hyatt checkin was easy and fast. The bellman were also very helpful.

We have some special needs in that we travel with large trucks for our equipment. The staff at the Hyatt took this in stride and made accommodations for us to park the truck with a minimum of issues. This service continued throughout our week long conference. The banquet and event staff were quick to respond to our needs and truly went above and beyond to make sure our event ran smoothly. The banquet food was very good and included a nice variety.

It is the service from the staff that really makes or breaks events. The Hyatt staff made a point of checking in with us frequently and made us feel at home in their hotel. They are terrific!

I would recommend this hotel to anyone whether you are looking for a place to hold an event or just a place to stay for a few days.

Last year after reviewing this hotel, I ran into a little security issue created by a housekeeping staff person. I notified management at the time and they emailed me that should I pass through Jacksonville again, they would provide me a free room. So right upfront, know that this room was free. I just decided to include it into my East Coast Florida beach tour as I headed back towards Atlanta from South Florida. I loved this place before and nothing has changed.

Location: The hotel is smack dab right downtown (n30 19 25.89,w81 39 18.83). With a south facing or east facing room you get to see all of the activity on the river. Downtown Jacksonville is relatively dead, unless it is a special events weekend. However, there are Bars scattered about and a few smaller restaurants at The Landing, which is a quick 4 minute walk along the river.

Parking: Is always a pain in a downtown area, including here. Self parking is $16 a day at a garage next door and valet parking is more than $20. No thanks! Since I arrived after 10pm, I parked at a meter, which is not enforced before 8am in the morning, making sure I had a 730am wake-up call to feed the meter for a few extra hours. I took a chance because Jacksonville downtown streets have not always been very safe. However, other than hotel guests, there was hardly anyone on the street near the hotel. The next day I noticed that cameras had been installed on some of the utility poles. A good thing, because I realized the next morning that I'd left a new beach umbrella on the back seat.

Appearance:
Outside and inside the hotel was beige, cold or cream. The interior was brightly lit and well maintained. The check-in agent was very friendly and very welcoming.

Room:
My corner room on the 9th floor was large with big windows that allowed an angle view of the river. It was large enough that 4 people could easily stay in it without bumping into each other. The furnishings, although not new, were definitely well maintained and of good quality. The carpet was a little disappointing. It was clean enough, but it was dark and didn't seem to have much padding under it. The tv, which I never watch while traveling was of the old fashion kind. The work space on the desk was decent and this room had a refrigerator (which I never touch). The curtains in the photo open up to a large picture window that lets in plenty of light. There was a strong wifi signal, but wifi is not free. In the lobby only is it free.

Bed:
Thick, warm and welcoming after a long day. The only irritating thing is it had about 5 pillows (regular and decorative) that you had to remove just to crawl into the bed. I promptly dropped off when my head hit that bed.

Bathroom:
There is a space between the bedroom and bathroom with a stand with coffeemaker, ice cup and make up mirror. The bathroom itself was not large, but it was well light and the wallpaper was maintained. The water in the shower came fast and warmed up quickly. They went the extra mile and actually had a tube of toothpaste along with shampoos, etc.

Summary:
It is about the same as last year. The hotel itself and the hotel's location are very good, but don't expect much activity around downtown at night other than bars. I would stay here again, even if I had to pay!
