Richard's Sandwich Shop in the Five Points shopping area, has been a fixture in the Riverside Neighborhood for decades. They offer the best Camel Riders** in Jacksonville, very good club sandwiches and other fare; the prices are reasonable, and the service is both fast and friendly. Go there regularly and they will recognize you the next time and, if you usually order the same thing, they will remember that, too.
**Jacksonville has one of the largest middle eastern populations on the East coast, consisting primarily of Christians from Lebanon and other places who fled the chaos and persecution after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Immigrants began arriving in the city as early as 1900, and today their second and third generation descendants own and operate many of the sandwich shops in the city. All of them feature sandwiches on pita bread, and most of them offer the Camel Rider, which consists of lettuce with slices of tomato, cheese, and cold cuts, served in a pita pocket with a dash of mustard and olive oil. It is a simple sandwich, but amazingly satisfying.
The food quality and service hasn't varied since the mid-80s when we started eating there regularly.
