“Volume and Quality, the Old Style Way!”
Reviewed 26 July 2013

I found Art's Checker BBQ on-line thinking it was a down home BBQ shack. And it is, but its much more than that.

Mainly, its seafood and down home cooking like the old days when quality really meant something! For example, how about old style greens, ribs, fried green tomatoes, fried shrimp by the bucket loads, old style cole slaw and scallop casserole.

We are now fans and hope to return often for both lunch and dinner from a local master chef! BTW, check out Art's excellent blog, Cracker Cooking.

“Fish fry Friday”
Reviewed 11 June 2013 via mobile

First time visiting checker's. They have all you can eat fish fry buffet on friday. Didnt know that. The fish was good but the cheddar grits were even better. Wish we good order from the whole menu instead of just participating in the fish fry buffet. Will have to try it again and order some BBQ.

“The Best in Town”
Reviewed 11 May 2013

We love this food so much, we asked Art to cater my daughter's wedding. People still rave about the food.
Art is kind, generous to a fault and a master chef.
During the Superbowl in Jacksonville, Art's was the only restaurant recommended by the New York Times. Don't let the outside fool you..that's part of the charm.

“Best Shrimp in all of Florida”
Reviewed 26 April 2013

WE enjoyed the all you can eat Friday Shrimp buffet. This place has the best shrimp, southern food, great service in all of Florida. The restaurant is a little weathered inside and out, nothing fancy. Get pass all that and enjoy some of the best southern food you'll ever eat. Art (chef) interacts with his customer in such a way--you feel like family and it's a good thing since this is buffet style. Even better than that, Art brings you plates of shrimps, whether blackened, fried or garlic, ....absolutely the best. Cheese grits, greens and OMGosh, these cookies---WOW brown sugar-oatmeal- yummy best ever, are brought to your table from the moment you walk in until you leave. Art's rule is "I don't serve left overs" so if there are left overs you get to take them home. We also went there for lunch "another" big hit. You pick your mail dish and then you get to choice one side plus all you can eat buffet sides again. TO MUCH FOOD not a big enough stomach. I'm a southern girl & I know southern food. Art my hats off to you........you truly rocked all your dishes. Highly recommend if you're in Jacksonville, look up & make a reservation for dinner Friday or Saturday night or stop by for lunch..... the only regrets, you ate too much. ENJOY!!

“A National Treasure”
Reviewed 26 January 2013

At Checkers, the home of cracker, red neck and trailer park trash delicacies, your affable host Art Jennette serves up unlimited quantities of delicious fried shrimps, collard greens, fried green tomatoes, cole slaw, cheese grits, crab cakes, fried white fish and ribs. After a full plate or two there is even more shrimp, and when you've had enough, you are served yummy cinnamon sugar cookies. There is nothing quite like Art, larger than life and bedecked in an enormous paisley chef's toque, wandering through the dining room yelling "more hot shrimp, aw yeah baby" until you cry uncle.

The restaurant is open in the evening only on Friday and Saturday for one seating at 6:30 p.m. You are advised to bring your own wine glasses, plates, cutlery and a table cloth, along with your own wine or beer, as the restaurant itself provides only styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery. At a few minutes after 7 p.m. Art announces the crab cakes "contain an ingredient you may not have tried before -- real crab." He then rings a dinner bell bell and everyone lines up to fill their own plates buffet style. After filling your plate, a huge plate of fried shrimp is brought to your table. This is Southern cracker food prepared as it should be, and dining at Checkers is an experience you will not soon forget. Art is a national treasure. Be sure to book a reservation, as this restaurant fills up quickly.
