I use to come here alot when I lived in Jacksonville. Came back to Jax and was craving Madrid's. Things have changed. New ownership. There is a lack of atmosphere and a HUGE lack of customer service, unless you speak Spanish.

We ordered the Tequenos, which were still wonderful. The Caldo Galleo soup was more broth than ingredients, but was flavorful. The shrimp Quesadilla was okay but three of the shrimp still had shells on them and it lacked flavor. The two beef soft shelled tacos were good with only picadillo and white queso cheese on top. The cubano Sandwhich was really good and flavorful and packed with meat but no pickles. Disappointing. The empanadas, pork and beef, were great. The dough was crisp and soft and the filling was generous and tasted great. The Masas, fried pork, was our favorite. Cooked perfectly with grilled onions, was really good. Although a bit on the fatty side. The white rice was hard and not edible, but the pork well made up for that. The black beans were okay. Asked for onions but did not see any.

All in all, it was good but not like it use to be. They added a Mexican flare with tacos, burritos and nachos. The smoothies are absolutely outstanding and worth a trip just for that in itself.

This was my third visit to Madrid, which says something in itself. Anything the Madrid lacks in atmosphere, which is admittedly basic, is made up for by its generous portions of attractive tasty food.

The chicken dishes (fricassee and con arroz) were both absolutely delicious. The fricassee was nicely stewed with a few veggies over rice. The arroz con pollo was baked with peppers over rice. Both meals came with beans and sweet plantains.

Another meal (palomilla steak) wasn't quite up to par with the chicken dishes. Although the steak portion was generous, and was trimmed of excess fat, it wasn't as warm as one would hope. I've had palomilla steak at other places which was flavored with garlic or other grilling spices which this lacked. Nonetheless, the sides were delicious and bountiful.

Service was efficient. The waitress took our orders quickly and accurately, and she topped off our drinks (tea and soda) a couple of times.

Madrid offers a wide variety - some tending toward the Cuban end of Spanish cuisine, others toward the Mexican. However, it's owned by Venezuelans. In summary, if you're feeling an urge toward any of these cuisines, you'll likely find something to suit your tastes here. Neither I, nor any of my friends, have left dissatisfied.
