Owner description: A museum celebrating the history of ship travel on the Columbia River.

We loved being able to go on board an actual lighthouse ship. The displays were easily accessible for young children, and the interactive exhibits were fun. The 3-D movie was probably not something we'd do again.

Definitely worth your time. We had no idea the perils man faced where the Columbia River meets the Pacific – WOW. We were encouraged to watch the Shark movie that had an upcharge. It wasn’t at all what we thought – more of a “look, they are endangered and we need to save them” school-type documentary. We should have passed to permit more time to explore the museum.

We were staying in Portland and had heard about all the interesting things to see in Astoria, it was well worth the drive.
The Maritime Museum was our favourite.
Watch the short movie about the Columbia River and the treacherous work of the river pilots, it’s fascinating.
There are many types of exhibits including intricate models, life size replicas and lots of historical artifacts.

The highlight was the Coast Guard cutter that happened to be docked behind the museum. They were kind enough to take several people on a tour throughout the ship. It was a real eye opener to see first-hand how these guardians of the waterways live and hear the stories of their heroism.

We recently made a second trip to Astoria and the Maritime Museum was our first stop.

Overall a super spot, well worth the visit. The exhibits are well done and informative and diverse and cover everything from pirate ships to commercial fishing. Adults could easily spend two hours here. We went with our children (ages 5, 8) and there was simply too much reading and too much information to process. They enjoyed the tugboat wheelhouse play area, the free rope making demonstration, and the lightship tour, but the majority of the exhibits were simply too complex.

excellent displays and information... we stayed for a couple of hours. the history of navigating the river and river mouth is fascinating. even more fun were the hands on installations and awesome videos of actual conditions and the work of the river and bar pilots. even if you don't usually do museums, this is one you'll want to visit.
and then... get the albacore fish & chips across the street at Bowpicker.
