Owner description: Shallon Winery is a very small, one-man operation that is open every afternoon, one to six PM, and has been for over 35 years. It, therefore, has to specialize in unique products unavailable elsewhere, such as totally wild berry wines, whey wines, Lemon Meringue Pie wine, and, Chocolate Orange wine. It is a working, functioning winery, not a wine shop. The winemaker prefers a one on one relation with his guests, which entails a brief visit and explanation in the wine making room, followed by tasting all the wines available in a sequence. Local historical information is usually included in the presentation. This visit may run from a minimum of a half hour to an hour or more depending on questions and conversation. Unfortunately, the winery can not afford to entertain larger groups, and frequently is closed to the walk-in public during the days of cruise ship arrivals. However, serious individuals or couples may call during the day for a suggestion for the best time, or just call the number when at the door, if it is not open.

Thanks, Paul, for hosting us and sharing your dreams and your passion for wine! We enjoyed each of your creations, and were happy that you so graciously shared your time with us. We wish you many more years of sharing your craft with the world!

This is my favorite winery in the world. The wine is fantastic and Paul is a great host. If you don't have the time for the full experience, well, then go pick up some Gallo at the Safeway up the street. The tour and tasting are part of the experience. I someone is in front of you, have patience and wait. It's worth it for the kind of personal attention you won't get anywhere else. No trip to Astoria is complete without a stop at Shallon.

Don't come here unless you have at least 1/2 hour to visit and taste. The owner is an original! He enjoys visiting with his guests and learning about you as you learn about him. He can give you great advice about what to do and see in the area - as well as share his original wine with you. We were glad we stopped in and took the time. His winery is immaculate and he tells you a great story as he leads you thru the process.

The stories we heard were very interesting, and the "view" painted in the windows provided a unique view of history. The time we spent there learning about wine making and the wines of Shallon Winery was time very well spent. The wine wasn't the cheapest available but we believe it is of great value and worth the price asked ($22-$42/bottle).
The taste of the Chocolate Orange wine, was the most unique and true chocolate orange, we've ever experienced. For more info: http://www.shallon.com/chocwine.htm. We bought 2 bottles of the Cranberry Whey wine and realized we should have bought more very quickly after we returned home.
We will definitely return to Shallon Winery when we return to Astoria, and may make a special trip to Astoria just to see Paul and buy some more wine. I also recommend the You Tube video of Shallon Winery for a quick preview of your visit.

Can't decide what has aged better, Paul, the wonderful owner or his wines! Most unique wines anywhere. What a great place and an even greater guy!
