Owner description: Shallon Winery is a very small, one-man operation that is open every afternoon, one to six PM, and has been for over 35 years. It, therefore, has to specialize in unique products unavailable elsewhere, such as totally wild berry wines, whey wines, Lemon Meringue Pie wine, and, Chocolate Orange wine. It is a working, functioning winery, not a wine shop. The winemaker prefers a one on one relation with his guests, which entails a brief visit and explanation in the wine making room, followed by tasting all the wines available in a sequence. Local historical information is usually included in the presentation. This visit may run from a minimum of a half hour to an hour or more depending on questions and conversation. Unfortunately, the winery can not afford to entertain larger groups, and frequently is closed to the walk-in public during the days of cruise ship arrivals. However, serious individuals or couples may call during the day for a suggestion for the best time, or just call the number when at the door, if it is not open.

We had been referred by a friend and told it was both a unique experience and wine. After reading the web site, we were even more intrigued. Paul is a one man show so you call the number at the door and if he's in, you are in for a rare treat.

In reading the website, you may get the idea that these are sweet, fruity wines. This is NOT the case. Paul has spent years perfecting his craft. As a former engineer, he is a man of science. The complexity of flavors did not disappoint or lack in surprise. The Chocolate Orange wine is NOTHING like what is on the market today. Served in tiny ice cream cones, the thick, rich TRULY chocolate wine was a treat.

Paul is exactly as he describes himself on the web site and so much more! I thoroughly enjoyed the stories, the humor and the visit as my husband and I tasted each of his wines. He "presents" his wine. It's not just buying a bottle of wine from the local wine shop, it's a true wine tasting experience. If you go, don't be in a hurry! At 90+, Paul enjoys sharing his knowledge and time as part of the experience. It made the experience that much more fun and lends memories to the bottles we purchased.

The only down side to this is it is a one man show and when the man is gone, I hope the winery and experience does not go with him. Truly a bit of Astoria that was worth the time.

Paul is running this business all on his own and we are always amazed. His wines are great and truly one of a kind. He takes his time and truly shows interest in getting to know you. We love his stories about his wine and he gave us great recommendations on places to visit while we are in town. Make sure to call him when you get to the winery and he will let you know when he can let you in. Have patience and you will truly enjoy your time. This is our second time to the winery and we will be back again next time we are in town. Hopefully he will be able to take the time and effort to make his absoluetly amazing Lemon Meringue Wine. I know it is labour intensive but it is the most memorable wine I have every had!!
Do your best to make time for this winery; it is like non other. Remember only open 1:00-5:00 daily and give him a call when you get to his winery, you might have to come back but it is worth it!

Thank you for writing the kind words on your second visit. How would I feel if no one ever returned? Am also particularly thankful for the invariable graciousness of all my Canadian guests.

Paul is the draw here. He will ask you how much time you have to spend and will adjust his talk accordingly. We were there around 90 minutes. When we first called him from his front door he was busy, so after we set a time to return, we crossed the street to a delightful little restaurant where we had hot dogs, an Italian soda and ice cream.

Thanks for taking the time to return that day, and taking the time to review - and for commenting on the unique little restaurant next door.

It may not be super easy to get in here but if you are lucky enough to meet Paul, you will walk away with so much more than great wine. We actually felt honored to be in his presence. With so much knowledge and humor to offer, there's nothing like a lesson in life from someone who's lived it with so much gusto! If you're in a hurry & want a quick tasting, this isn't the place for you. If you want a wine experience, make the point of getting a reservation. You won't regret it.

Thanks kindly for your exuberant review. It cheers me more than some of the others.
Thankfully, I was not grumpy or rude that day.

Sign on the door said open 1-2:30 and 4-6, not 12-5 daily. No worries! It was 1:18. So, we called the number on the door as the door was locked so we followed instructions. "Mr. Grumpy" answered and was rude and brusque. We were told to come back tomorrow because he was busy. We explained that we would not be in town the next day so he said goodbye. I was told by locals that this is not unusual.

Grumpy and brusque, yes. I try not to give that impression; I’m sorry.
Open daily, yes! Have been open every afternoon, one to six, 365 days a year for 35 years (longer than the young lady has been alive.) Being a one-man operation, once in a while, have to take an hour or so for a doctor’s appointment, or the post office. A new guest needs to allow up to an hour – a return guest – five minutes.
