“A big disappointment”
Reviewed 8 September 2011

We arrived at the Oregon Film Museum only 20 minutes before they closed, but we really wanted to see it so we decided to pay the $4 admission price anyway. It turns out that the museum is just two small rooms and a couple of jail cells, one of which you can go into. The jail cells were the most interesting part of the museum, but mostly from a historical perspective, not because of the very limited displays related to movies. One of the small rooms had just a couple of movie posters and some old computer monitors that weren't turned on, and that was it. The other room had a few interactive exhibits, one in which someone could stand in front of a green screen and you could see them on a monitor with a different background. We saw everything there was to see and do within 15 minutes, and left the museum feeling like we had wasted $4.

“A cool place for film buffs”
Reviewed 15 August 2011

I have heard and read a lot about this Museum and although it wasn't open when I've tried to visit, the building itself is cool and I plan to catch it on another trip. The museum is in the old county jail in Astoria, which was in a movie itself. The Goonies was filmed in Astoria so the town itself is a nice draw for film buffs. They are also great restaurants, shops, the Astoria Column and other attractions in the area.

“A complete waste of time and money if you're not a Goonies fan!”
Reviewed 29 July 2011

My boyrfriend and I went to Astoria earlier this month. We were very excited about seeing the Oregon Film Museum while we there, since a large number of films or scenes from films have been shot in Oregon. Unfortunately the name "Oregon Film Museum" is a complete misnomer! There is next to nothing there that is not about the "Goonies" movie.

Unlike most museums which have displays to look at and information to read, this museum is primarily interactive, which may be great for kids, but we aren't particularly fond of interactive exhibits, not to mention that there are really only three or four of them total, and the day we went, none of them was working. Although we were only charged half price because of that, I have to say that we would not have been that interested in them had they been working!

What we really wanted to see was photos and information, maybe costumes or scenery from the hundreds of films that have been shot in Oregon at least in part. There was one poster from "Kindergarten Cop," but that was about it for any other movies than the Goonies, which neither of us had seen or wanted to see.

The museum is housed in the Old City Jail, and my understanding was that this was a way to save the building. Because it was also the site of a major scene in the "Goonies," it also panders to the interest of the many Goonies fans who come to town each year to see where the film was shot. It was rushed into being last year for the 25,000 fans, including some from abroad, who came to Astoria for the 25th anniversary of the film. It is very poorly done and not the least bit professional. One interesting display of quotes from movies - you were supposed to guess which movies they were from - was plastered on the ceiling in a traffic heavy location, making it hard to read. While it may have seemed creative to someone, putting things to read on the ceiling seems ridiculous to me. Many people didn't even see it, and if you tried to stop and read it, you got trampled by other people coming through the small area, not to mention that there were no answers to what movies the quotes were from!

For anyone who is not a Goonies fan, this museum is a complete waste of time and money. We were there all of 15 minutes. With all the other great museums in Astoria, skip this one. I wouldn't go back again even if it were free!
