This is a very long, and high at one end, bridge from the south end of Washington to Astoria Oregon. Only way to drive there directly, so glad it was also interesting. No fee as the bond has been paid off.

I love driving over the Astoria-Megler Bridge, as long as it isn't too windy. The Oregon end of the bridge starts out very high above the river and then drops down to water level. Approaching the Washington side, the bridge rises again, but not near as high as on the Oregon side.

I remember being in my parents truck going over this bridge as a child. It was always the highlight of our trips to the south Washington coast. Back in the day, there was a toll both on the Oregon side. The toll booth is gone now, but you can see where it once was on the approach on the Oregon side. My dad used to complain that they had to have paid for the bridge several times over for the length of time that they collected the tolls over the years.

The bridge is an icon on the north Oregon coast. Take the time to drive over to Washington, even if you only turn around and come back. The views from the bridge are awesome.

It is a longer span than most bridges we see in the West. It fits naturally into the location and enhances rather than disrupts the view.

This is the four mile long bridge crossing the mighty Columbia River, connecting Astoria, Oregon to Washington State. The drive over gives you a great look at some of the sandbars that make navigating the Columbia River so difficult. Once you get to Washington State, there are several quaint fishing villages along the highway. The drive back across gives you a great view of Astoria!

Physically, this is an interesting bridge and who would have fun analyzing it as they drive over the Columbia River into Oregon (or vice versa). I like the color of this bridge even though most of it was under construction at the time. Do not miss it from either side. Next time I will take a boat trip out of Astoria so I can ride underneath it.
