“Went here to see Santa Claus...”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

And he was awesome. The best Santa I've ever seen. Other than that, the museum can hold your interest for 20 minutes or so as you learn about the rich family that lived here and see how they lived. For me, the best part is the Giant Sequoia tree growing out front.

“Beauty and history in a grand old mansion”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

This is a beautifully restored Victorian mansion perched on a steep hill overlooking the Columbia River. The history of Captain Flavel and his family is fascinating - be sure to watch the short video in the carriage house before touring the main house. The woodwork, fireplaces, stairways, stained glass are all marvelous, and the gardens are lovely, too. Best of all: You can actually enter some of the rooms, rather than just peeking at them behind barriers. Be sure to check out the bathrooms! They were very modern for their day.

“Step back in time.”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

The house is in great shape and it was interesting to look in all the rooms. Many of them had furniture that was original to the house. The volunteer who greeted us was a fountain of knowledge and answered all of our many questions.

“Wonderful old house”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

We came here with our two young daughters, who love exploring old houses. It's beautifully preserved. The video in the welcome center helped give a lot of historical context to the visit, especially since there wasn't a guided tour (which we actually prefer, since the girls like to take their time). It was well worth the price of admission.

“Great old home”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

This is a great place to tour if you are in Astoria. Centrally located, beautiful grounds [right across from the old county jail - now their film museum]. It is a beautifully preserved piece of history which is well worth the time you'd spend there.
