“Pleasant surprise in Astoria!”
Reviewed 13 September 2012

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. I have to say, our impression was positively colored by the fact that due to an error on the hotel's part, they upgraded us from a standard room to a suite (room 202). That suite was lovely, consisting of two bedrooms separated by a kitchenette and bathroom. The "master" bedroom had a fireplace and windows that overlooked the river and the bridge; the view was spectacular. Everything was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were quiet. Breakfast was adequate, but not remarkable. The staff were all exceedingly pleasant. If we were ever in Astoria again (unlikely but not impossible), we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view if you can.

This Holiday Inn Express is brand new: in appearance anyway.. it's clean, smells clean, and as most HIE's, is dependable. You can always know you'll get a comfortable, clean room at a HIE. The staff was friendly.

Room Tip: the hotel is at the base of the WA/OR bridge, but even though it's right under a major thoroughf...

The Holiday Inn Express overlooks the Columbia River and the Astoria Bridge which spans the river between Oregon and Washington. The hotel is just a short walk from downtown, and is located on a waterfront trail making it easy to frequent downtown area businesses or to just go for a morning run or evening walk. The hotel even has bikes you can use. The trail is home to the Astoria Trolley - a $1 trip to downtown and along the riverfront. It's worth doing and is a great attraction in itself. The hotel is nice - typical of a Holiday Inn Express, the rooms are comfortable, and the bedding and linens are nice. We rented a fireplace room with spa tub, something you'd think would be great for couples, yet other than the king bed, there is only a single chair so only one person can sit and admire the view or sit in front of the fireplace at a time. There's no other seating other than a desk chair in these spa/fireplace rooms. Next time we'd skip the upgrade and just get a regular view room that included a couch or more seating. Other than that, the staff is excellent, breakfast good, and the rooms and furnishings are good - as you would expect of a newer Holiday Inn Express hotel. Rooms do have DVD players and there is a good collection of movies you can browse through next to the lobby. If you're looking for host of television programming or pay-per-view movies, those aren't available here. Access to the hotel is very easy, and parking is right there.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a river view room. It's worth it. We stayed on the fourth floor and would reco...

This hotel makes a visit to Astoria very special, for many reasons:
1. Pet friendly but is immaculate with no pet odors.
2. Right under the bridge with a great view of the Columbia River and traffic.
3. Business center, pool, jacuzzi, washer/dryer.
4. Microwaves with sets of dishes (paper).
5. A full buffet breakfast with healthy options.
6. Rooms and lobby are beautifully decorated.
7. Rental bikes for the riverwalk.
8. Great walks near by if you are a walker.
9. Sofa bed had a great mattress!
This is the best Holiday Inn in which I have ever stayed. I highly recommend it!

Room Tip: The suites are wonderful! Three beds and a nice size bathroom, TVs for all beds.

Stumbled on this after hiking all day at Rainier. Got in late but were given a great room on the water side of the hotel. Fireplace and hot tub in our room. The hotel is new and clean. Other than slow internet, it was perfect. Wish we had stayed here two nights instead of venturing down to Cannon Beach.

Room Tip: Water Side has a great view

The hotel seems fairly new. The price is a little high but I was just staying for one evening. Clean fresh rooms. Breakfast room could use more tables and chairs and more breakfast items. The hotel was full so the breakfast room was packed and no where to sit. Probably would not use this hotel again if in the area unless it was the cheapest.

I'm going to disagree with a lot of the reviewers. It's true that this is a very nice hotel...lots of amenities and very clean. The problem I have is that my room is too large. That's right. I'm sure most people would love all of the room, but for me it's too much. I had a king suite, and while I love everything there is, the one thing I hate...absolutely hate...is that the bed is in its own little spot near the door. The huge window with the spectacular view is on the other side of the wall where it can't be seen from the bed.

I'm someone who, when in a hotel, likes to lay in bed and watch TV, use my laptop, read, snack, etc. Here, it made me feel like a prisoner because it's so cramped and dark. I know, it's meant for sleep. And it's true that the little living area by the window has a lot....another TV, a desk, the fireplace, a couch. I could sit in there and do everything I want to do, but I am never comfortable on hotel furniture because...well...I'm sure other people have been "comfortable" on it as well.

That's the only complaint. All of my stuff is too far away and I can't look out the window from the bed. :-( Everything else is great, just like all of the reviewers said. But honestly, I have spent the past three nights in a run of the mill motel on the beach farther south for half the price and I LOVED it. Can't say the same for this one, and I am a big HIE fan.

Room Tip: Don't get a suite if you plan on seeing the great view from the bed. But do get a room with a ri...
