“Loved The Cannery”
Reviewed 24 August 2009

We loved the Cannery and will be going back there. I found the staff very helpful and friendly. The look and feel of the hotel was very nice. It was extremely peaceful and well-appointed. The room was lovely and the view was excellent. I did not find any problems with the sound-proofing of the rooms - we were, however, on the fourth floor. I knew our neighbors were home only when I was out on the balcony and they were also out on their balcony.

No, the Cannery does not have AC - however, I think Astoria on the waterfront probably very rarely would need AC. We love not having to run the AC and prefer to have the windows open anyway. The fan they have under the window seat worked wonders for bringing in cool air off the river. We also left our balcony door open and this cooled the place down wonderfully.

My requirements for a hotel are not that it has a restaurant nor room service - many places do and they are often not that good quality anyway - so I'm more than happy to go out or have something ordered in - which the Cannery is just fine with.

We found a wonderful Italian restaurant in Astoria - great prices and great food - went back twice for that!

The beds in the hotel were wonderful, liked the bathroom too.

The only down side I could see was that our room was starting to look a little worn (not much though). Most hotels are like this - a few nicks in the paint, and smudges on the door frames - just for this price I'd like to see the Cannery attend to these things more regularly.

The breakfast was nice also.

We loved the river traffic - but be warned that if you find things like fog horns annoying then this might not be the place for you.

The river view is incredible. You can't get closer to the Columbia than this and be in comfort, unless you have a yacht. This is smaller hotel, wonderful staff, including the chauffeur who took us around town in a '46 Caddy Fleetwood.

The view, rooms, binoculars in the room and tub took this hotel to the 5 star rating! We enjoyed our stay.

The staff was attentive and were clearly trying very, very hard and we liked them- if they had a little more training they could go to the next level of amazing! It wouldn't take much.

We got a ride in the classic car one night - it was great and the driver was full of good information. Directed us to an awesome breakfast place for the next day!

It is expensive, but with the view of the ships, water, bridge it made for a very nice and romantic get away!

It was my birthday so I was especially happy that it was a great place!

This hotel delivered everything it advertised.
The overall hotel decor is beautiful. We booked a standard room, and had the luxury to choose the floor (we chose the top floor, I'd recommend that). The rooms were nice and spacious, with private balconies out on the river. You can see the big Astoria bridge, which I think is really beautiful. The shipping channel is very close to the hotel, and it is AMAZING to see those huge commercial vessels go by. The hotel staff is very pleasant & accommodating. The breakfast is yummy, and you can make yourself comfortable anywhere in the lobby space (instead of having to sit in some kind of sterile breakfast room). We lounged in some chairs that looked out onto the shipping channel, reading the complimentary newspaper (The Oregonian). Around 5:00 pm, the hotel has a little happy hour, free wine with appetizers. Once in a while they have a speaker scheduled for the happy hour, and the one we observed was very interesting (discussion about the Lewis/Clark experiences right at the mouth of the Columbia). I can't remember the schedule, but I'm sure it's posted at the hotel site.
We went to Astoria over the 4th of July weekend, and the town had a nice selection of events, that were bustling, but not mobbed with people. Astoria has really re-invented itself, stop by! You'll have a nice time.
We were able to see the fireworks from the main hotel terrace on the ground floor (our room balcony pointed away from the fireworks). All the hotel guests gathered & watched.
One of the nicest features of the hotel are the bicycles you can borrow. First come, first serve concept, they are comfy cruiser bikes in various sizes. We took the bikes for an entire day, and cruised along the trolley way, which covers really the entire waterfront of Astoria. It's a great way to get around, you can cover a lot of ground and have no parking hassles. The nicest part was the relaxed hotel attitude towards the bikes: we asked what we should do, when we stop at an event, store, or restaurant. We would obviously have to park the bikes, and what if they were stolen? The hotel told us not to worry. "It's on us," they said. The bikes were never stolen, of course, and we did park them all over the place. I recommend asking this question when you borrow the bikes (better safe than sorry!), and then have the peace of mind.
When you visit Astoria, also check out the roof terrace of the Elliott Hotel. I still prefer the Cannery Pier Hotel for staying; you can enjoy the roof terrace by simply visiting the Elliott (with your bikes).
Also a really neat place is the Fort George Brewery (great beer!), and - all the way out at the end of the waterfront - the Rogue Brewpub (check out the old cannery building inside!).
Bicycle around on the East Moorland Basin harbor, and watch people catch sturgeons.
And, make ample time to visit the Maritime Museum - again, on the waterfront, easily reachable by bike.
So, you see, you'll have a fun & busy time in Astoria. I highly recommend it.

Stayed two nights in mid-June. This hotel is wonderful in all respects. The location is right on the Columbia River. Parking is free. All rooms have a balcony facing the river and it's fun to watch the oceangoing traffic coming and going on the river. The rooms are very ample with a uniquely laid out bath and lavatory area. The hotel offers an above average breakfast and a complimentary afternoon wine and cheese reception. Public areas of the hotel are bright and cheery and really reflect the riverside location. There are several restaurants with in walking distance and the hotel staff is very helpful with dining choices.. The hotel is also very near the trolley line. While it may be the most expensive place in town, this property is worth it. It really makes you feel like you are at the entrance to a great river. I recommend it to anyone, young or old!

We found the Cannery Pier Hotel by seeing it on the water front in Astoria. The visual impression from the road was excellent but the experience following our entry through the front door was exceptional. Reception was very helpful and showed a real interest in having us as guests. All of the rooms face the Columbia River so the scenery is beautiful. We observed gulls, mergansers, ducks, and a sea lion. This is in addition to the normal boat traffic passing by. From the lobby and common areas to each room the design and amenities was exceptional. There has been a lot of attention to detail by the architect and the interior decorators. They have even thought to place binoculars in each room. In the common lobby area there is a telescope. Free transport to and from dinner in a chauffered antique Buick sedan gives you "rock star" status. THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY FOR ANY SPECIAL OCCASION. If it is not such an occasion the stay will make you feel like it is.
