We are here as of this writing and are loving the hotel, the surrounding natural beauty and the quiet serenity. The room is very comfortable with windows on two opposite sides affording gorgeous views and plenty of light. The staff are incredibly friendly. The breakfast buffet was filling and delicious. The architecture of the CCC era buildings is quintessential southwestern style. Coming in March was a good choice because the temperatures are mild. Based on our experience so far, we would highly recommend this place if you are coming for or going to Carlsbad and especially if you are here to go to the McDonald Observatory and Fort Davis (those reviews to come later).

first stop on our 2014 "winter vacation" in glorious west texas. loved this WPA-built property; our room (#20, I think) was a corner one: three windows, stunning views morning & night; handmade cedar furniture, reed ceiling, adobe walls, and giant conifers filled with singing birds. Ranger Tara, and the campground hosts, took us out birding on the weekend morning: generous folks, sharing hiking suggestions. we stayed 3 days; only downside is the restaurant which is gloomy, uncared for, an afterthought. Fort Davis is a dry town, and perhaps, no one believes that the restaurant is viable without some form of alcohol licensing. As much as i loved the little Fort Davis town, I would stay here again easily.

Room Tip: Room 20 or ask for a corner room with a view.

Fort Davis Indiana lodge is a beautiful getaway awesome mountains surround you. I went with my family and we had an awesome time. We will definitely go back. The only bad thing I can say about this place is the restaurant is expensive so you have to drive 10mins downtown to get something to eat other than that it's definitely worth it!!

The CCC built this place a long time ago, but it is amazing how the older portion never seems to age. They built it to last back then. I enjoyed visiting Indian Lodge as a child and enjoyed it again on our recent visit. Nice pool and great hiking trails. Also, a nice place to ride your bike. We had no problems of any type so we recommend it highly.

The worst hotel stay I have ever had. Between the rude staff, the lack of hot water while we were there, the rooms heater being subpar, and then the state park police being nothing but gun toting bullies using intimidation tactics, it was awful. The room itself was not horrible just plain, no view except through the window over the bed. I say steer away from this place or you might just leave cold and angry like we did.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

Indian Lodge presents me with a problem. In some ways it is magnificent -- the Pueblo-style architecture, the way it nestles each room in the natural setting, the magnificent 1930s-era handcrafted furniture, the serene period decor of the room. In other ways, it is maddeningly inadequate -- NO alcohol of any kind served at the restaurant and none allowed to be seen in public anywhere, a lovely kiva-style fireplace that has been SEALED UP, floors so thin that the contractor should have been sued, and maintenance standards so low that the heater vent grill was nearly 100% clogged. Concerning alcohol, Jeff Davis County is "dry" but a restaurant in town has a liquor license. I believe the no-alcohol policy is a State Park policy, which means we had to drive in to town every night to get a decent meal. This was New Year's Eve and the lndian Lodge restaurant was serving bubbly grape juice. Really??? As for the forbidden fireplaces, I've stayed at a number of other adobe-style lodgings that have managed to keep their fireplaces in working order and managed proper sustainability practices. Why can't Indian Lodge do the same, instead of bricking up the fireplace? We stayed in January, and a fire would have been so romantic and functional. I was prepared for bad flooring, as many others have complained. But these floors squeak with every step and are so porous that we heard our downstairs neighbors speak as if they were in a tent next to us. We felt guilty walking around or speaking in a normal voice, knowing we'd be disturbing people. Overall, the room seemed clean but when we tried to get more heat, my husband noticed the ceiling vent was thoroughly clogged. He said he can't imagine why the heating system hasn't shut down, and this is neither safe nor hygienic practice. Bottom line: The state of TX has a lovely, unique resource in the Indian Lodge but they need to get a more professional operator in there and need to accept the reality that people enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and that doesn't make us residents of Sodom and Gomorrah!

Room Tip: Flooring is cheap and squeaky and lets in huge amounts of sound from the room above/below. Get a 2n...

Our room looked out on spectacular views of the Davis Mountains. It was spartan, but cozy. Be warned, there are fireplaces, but they are sealed off. The staff at the front desk are super friendly and very knowledgeable about the area. The bed had a comfy mattress with a lovely warm bedspread, and the pillows were just right. We did find it strange that the mattress didn't fit in the frame, and there was a 6-8 inch gap on the side of the bed. Nonetheless, we can highly recommend a fantastic stay at the Indian Lodge, and would stay here again.
