We visited on a quiet day the week after Spring Break. I had not been there since the early 60's and the Fort has been beautifully restored. The most interesting part was the restored hospital. Great guides and staff. Don't miss this if you are out that way.

The park service did a great job restoring the buildings and associated ruins (dating from the mid 1800's). The museum is very well done with great displays and artifacts. The building tours and dioramas add a great detail to frontier life. Kids loved it, they could run around on the gravel paths and look at the covered wagons and cannons. They have easy hiking trails that lead up into the cliffs over looking the fort.

Highly recommended, well run site and an interesting part of US history.

Walking the grounds is going back in time. The Parks Service did an excellent job of restoring many of the buildings and giving visitors a sense of the history that happened here. A highlight for me was visiting the hospital and learning about how the various illnesses were treated - and seeing the instruments used. This Fort was very important during the time of settlers on their way to California for gold - the San Antonio/El Paso road goes right through the fort.

If you are interested in life during the pioneer days, this is a good place to learn about it. The fort has been restored and you can tour it at your own pace.

The Fort Davis Historical Site is great!! They have done a lot more than the last time we were here. I love walking through the soldier's quarters, the officer's homes, the hospital, and the most recently refurbished part, the Commissary. On certain days, they have people in period costumes showing how they used to cook, etc. It is very inexpensive to get in, and you can stay as long as you want. I love wandering the parade grounds and listening to the recordings they play re-inacting the parades they had to do every day. It really makes you think about how difficult if must have been to live there, and appreciate what we have now. It is beautiful with the mountains in the background. You won't regret visiting!!
