Prude Ranch
Reviewed 1 August 2013

We called several weeks ahead of our trip to plan an overnight at the highly rated Prude Ranch. Granted it also serves as a camp for children of all ages the ranch also has rooms to rent out for travelers in the area. The Prude Ranch also advertises horse back riding...1 hour rides through the country side. The horseback ride was 27 minutes long, when we asked for an explanation we were told that while they were getting things ready for the riders counted as part of the hour but then another young man said that he always rode for an hour and did not know why it was cut short. The rooms were ok but were dirty. Soap from previous guests left in the shower as well as dead spiders on the floor. The advertisement for food in their cafe on site does not apply to Sunday so if you want breakfast you will have to drive all the way back to Ft. Davis. Not impressed considering there are so many better places to stay in Ft. Davis.

I complained about the charge for the 27 minute ride and expected to be either compensated with money or another ride for the kids. "Bruce" hem-hawed around with multiple excuses that were in conflict with each comment but did squeeze out $40.00. For a $300 + stay that was poor! Stay at Butterfield Inn or Wayside B & B or Mt. Trail Lodge B & B for a better stay!

My daughters went to Prude Ranch when they were kids and now their children are going. Two generations of Prude Ranch cowgirls! What a delightful experience, where kids learn to ride horses, experience leadership opportunities, meet new friends, learn discipline and responsibility, and have a great time all at once!! The setting is in the beautiful Davis Mountains, with stars as bright as you will ever see and fresh West Texas mountain air. Parades, rodeos, camp outs, skits, and respect for God and fellow campers makes this a great experience.

Prude Ranch guest cabin are simple and could use several upgrades, but the ranch is wonderful. Staff is excellent at the summer camp and make the experience awesome for the kids.
The rooms are simple, no tv, no cell service, no internet. The ranch is not about spoiling you while in your room, so don't go with that expectation. If management would focus more on that aspect, it would be perfect.

Room Tip: If not happy with your room or something is not working, ask for a different room that fits your nee...

Prude Ranch is in a lovely spot in the Davis Mountains, however, that is the best thing I can say about my recent abbreviated one-night stay. The staff is nice and helpful. However, it is my understanding that the ranch is no longer owned by the Prude family due to various circumstances. That said, whoever currently owns it needs to come spend some time in the rooms and decide if they would let their own family members stay there. There is a difference between rustic and just plain old. The furnishings are at least 40+ years old, the pull out couch was terrible even before it was pulled out. There was an ant problem in our room, a leak under the sink, drippy bathroom faucets, uncomfortably hard beds, and burnt-out light bulbs that needed to be replaced. I expected better and was looking forward to sitting on the porch enjoying the view, but instead we opted to move to other other accommodations in the area. This place has so much potential and I do hope that proper care, maintenance and upgrades are made soon to keep this historic ranch from fading off into the sunset.

Room Tip: Go to the Butterfield Inn at Ft. Davis downtown. It's about 6 miles from Prude Ranch.

Stayed in a two bedroom cabin (200/night). I've stayed at several dude ranches in Texas and expected more here. First, there were 60-80 kids from neighboring schools on field trip. They were mostly quiet. Accommodations were meager. Very dated....1960s or older. Mold underneath sink. No shampoo. AC worked well though. No tv, no phone which is ok with me. Just that for 200 a night I expected more. Enjoyed buffet at Indian Lodge and watching stars and Saturn at McDonalds Observatory. Try lunch at Ft Davis hotel. Campy and old time cool. Delicious milkshakes and burgers. Prudes, update and I'll be back. Also, readjust prices!

Stayed in #45 and the king bed was okay but all the bunk beds had worn down mattresses. Tile missing around the sink, wood peeling on doors, spiderwebs in the windows complete with spider.
Enjoyed the quiet, the breeze, seeing the deer and stars at night. WiFi was sketchy and we felt like second class citizens since we booked independently (not as part of a group) --- they acted like they didn't know what to do with us! No ranch activities over Memorial day w/e despite having a fair number of guests there.
My girls enjoyed the pool; I thought it could have used a little cleaning. Food from the buffet was so-so. Overall, the place looks like it's coasting on it's past reputation. I'll look for another option next time we're in the area.

I'm sorry that you were unhappy with your stay. We have new house keepers and they are working harder to make sure that everything is clean.

I was very mad when i got in to the internet page an saw the staff page i dont think is fair that you guys would leave bibi out of it. She does so much for you if it was not for her your rooms would not be as clean as they are, she worries about the rooms been clean for the guest so you should take in consideration that she does so much for you guys to be left out she is part of the staff as well DONT YOU GUYS THINK!!!!!
