The earthen, adobe exterior walls belie the charm of the interior--scrubbed hardwood floors, lovely antiques, the aroma of homemade baked goods wafting from the dining room-- all lovingly tended by a knowledgeable and hospitable hostess. These factors combine to offer a first-rate "retreat from the rat-race" experience. This B & B is absolutely pet-friendly--my only requirements were to have the dog relieve itself elsewhere besides on the property, and to crate the dog if left alone in the room. The owner advised me during the reservation process she had such a good history with dog-owners she did not charge an extra fee. The only downer--my room was cooled by an ancient, noisy evaporative cooler which required all windows be open on the opposite wall, including, yes, the bathroom. I felt violated by this fact and would have preferred an unobtrusive window air conditioner.

Kathie goes out of her way to make sure each guest is comfortable and relaxed. She is knowledgeable about about the Fort Davis area and can provide any information travelers need.
Our room had two double beds and was clean and comfortable. We ate dinner at the Mexican Restaurant in town, La Cueva, which was a winner.

Very comfortable, quiet, right in town. Lots of antiques to look at. Yummy breakfast. Helpful hostess. Great stars at night!

Nice reading room with wifi if you brought your own laptop, and many magazines.

Near the Macdonald Observatory.

We stayed two nights at the Veranda, using Fort Davis as a base for touring Big Bend National Park. The main building is old and quite beautiful. We stayed in the carriage house, which was way bigger than we needed (two bedrooms, living room, kitchen) because we had our dog with us -- it would be a great bargain for a family. Everything was very comfortable and perfectly clean: old fashioned, but that is part of the charm. Breakfast was delicious, and hostess Kathy was super-friendly and super-helpful. A find.

We stayed at the Veranda last year for one night. We rode the Harley to Ft. Davis and visited the Observatory the next morning.

The Veranda is a warm and cozy place to spend a few days. Be sure to request a sunny room. I did not know that and our room was a little dark. But it was away from the street and quiet. It rained all night and we heard the rain hit some metal thing. Having said that I am not complaining. It is a historic house and this can happen. The room was large and inviting.

The house has a large reading room with tons of newspapers and magazines.

We had breakfast in Kathy's beautiful large dining room. She lets you choose at what time to serve breakfast. We were suprised to find another couple with us at the large table. It was great, we all started introducing ourselves. After we had finished eating, Kathy, the hostess, joined us and told some great stories. It was a very lovely morning.

Breakfast was absolutely delicious and very filling. Kathy made crepes with ham and cheese. Dessert was homemade cobbler. Lots of fresh coffee.

What I really liked is that we had lots of privacy, and at the same time personal attention from the owner.

Overall, a great experience. Wish we had stayed another day.
