Holiday Inn Express Baltimore-Downtown
Ranked #17 of 67 Hotels in Baltimore
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 12 June 2014

This hotel is clean, friendly, and everything you could ask for from a Holiday Inn Express. However, this is not located in a good neighborhood and guests should be prepared to take cabs or coordinate with the free hotel shuttle for transportation. My boyfriend and I both live in major metropolitan areas and enjoy walking vs cabs, so we are used to urban living but this neighborhood really was not very safe to walk around in. Across from the hotel is the Juvenile Detention Center and behind the hotel is the Baltimore Police Station and Homicide Investigation Unit. After arriving, it was decided we would not be walking and rely mostly on cabs to get around.
Bottom line: Sketchy neighborhood aside, it was a reasonably priced hotel with free wifi, good continental breakfast, and clean, quiet rooms. As long as you are prepared to put some cash toward cabs or plan your day around the free hotel shuttle schedule, you will enjoy your stay. Cabs are reasonably priced, with most rides costing between $8-15 (Fell's Point, Inner Harbor, Little Italy).

We appreciate hearing about your most recent experience and want to remind you that there are other options for transportation other than the hotel shuttle that do not cost but are reliable. The Charm City Circulator is free to the general public and takes passengers to most all major attractions in Downtown Baltimore. The hotel's breakfast is actual a Full Buffet Breakfast. The Juvenile Service Center is a very comprehensive facility that serves the needs of families with troubled kids. In addition to the Police Headquarters being located just a block away, City Hall, the Fire Commissioners Head Quarters and the States Attorneys Office are all within a one block radius of the hotel. This hotel is as safe in this location as any other hotel located anywhere in the City of Baltimore. Even more so.

My girlfriend and I decided to stay here for a one night get away. We chose this hotel due to price and location. The price was cheaper than most of the other hotels that were right in inner harbor, or by the stadium. When we arrived we were greeted by two young ladies. They weren't the nicest people in the world, but seemed professional. Parking was 15 dollars in addition to the hotel room which is about average for the area. There are a ton of homeless people very close by (across the street) which made my girlfriend a little nervous walking through the area... The room itself was very clean with a nice over look of the city. The bathroom was spacious and had great shower water pressure. Our only complaint was that in the middle of the night our room phone kept ringing off the hook. they apparently had problems with a software upgrade. I slept through the ringing but my girlfriend got very little sleep and was upset until she unplugged the phone from the wall. It was approximately a 5 block walk to inner harbor and a 10 dollar cab ride to fells point or federal hill. Overall it was what we expected for the room rate. I may stay here again if the price is right!

Thank you for your comments. The appearance of homelessness in the area is due to the Health Care for the Homeless facility that many people visit the area to receive free medical treatment. The issue relating to the phone system you experienced was resolved immediately following the conclusion of the System Refresh.

Booked this hotel because it was one of the cheapest near the downtown area. Then I figured out why...it's not at the best part of the downtown area. The hotel itself is clean and wonderful! The rooms are nicely sized especially the bathroom. Many hotel bathroom are cramped and you barely have any room when opening and closing the door. The rooms were excellent! Even came with a microwave and fridge. The bed and pillow were one of the best I've slept on. Walls and window were sound proof or the hotel was just very quite because when other people were coming back late I wasn't woken up by doors slamming or people talking in the hallway. You can get easily confused when going to your room after you get off the elevator because it isn't a typically hotel with long hallways. The lobby is very unique since the building used to be a bank. They do have a complimentary shuttle that goes a one mile radius of the hotel so that helped me get to dinner at the inner harbor and back safely. I wouldn't recommend walking around the area at night but location isn't a thing they can change. They do have customer service and clean rooms which is very important.

Your comments are very important to us. Being able to provide a facility that is clean and well maintained cared for by associates who are friendly and caring along with the value of added amenities that include free breakfast, shuttle transportation and Internet access is important to our guest. In addition to having a microwave and refrigerator in the rooms we also have safe, coffee makers, hair dryers and 32" flat screens televisions.

Our hotel experience had both positive and negative aspects. The room was clean and all amenities decent. Breakfast was average with lots of choices but lower quality food.
However I booked a nonrefundable room and after it was already booked I was informed there would be a 15.00 parking charge to park in the hotel lot as their guest. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels and never had to pay for parking. Then we were offered a free shuttle for the next morning and when we tried to get the shuttle it was full and gone before nine am even came.
I would recommend this as a decent base for inner harbor activities but be prepared for extra fees and broken promises.

Thank you for your comments. We are proud to know that your hotel accommodations met your expectations. Our rooms are clean and well maintained. The complimentary breakfast items featured on our menu are quality products prepared daily. In addition to the breakfast we provide free Wired and Wireless High Speed Internet Access along with the Shuttle. Which is always in high demand. Parking is a separate charge and is not included in your room rate as you will find with hotels located in downtown areas of most every major city. This is not uncommon. The $15 fee for parking is the least expensive of any hotel here in downtown Baltimore which can average approximately $ 25 per day.

Stayed here to attend family function. Excellent front desk staff. Very attentive. Ericka at the desk was EXTREMEMLY helpful. She gives five star service. I definitely wanted to mention her. Parking is behind the hotel, but I did not find it to be a problem. Lot may be full if you arrive late, but street parking very convenient and free til 8 AM. Shuttle is available and is a free service except for the gratuity for the driver. Both drivers we had were very nice and helpful and tried to accommodate our schedule. Although several blocks from the harbor, it is an easy walk to the water and Little Italy. I found the area along the walk to the harbor to be safe, but I would recommend doing it when it is still light.....just common sense. Room was clean and quiet and comfortable. The complimentary breakfast was good for such a hotel - certainly adequate to start your day. I would definitely recommend this Holiday Inn.

After having booked this I then read the reviews on here. Granted, it's not in the best part of town but if you're looking for a base whilst in the city then it's ideal. As with any city, use your intuition and be sensible-use a taxi if out late.

We stayed for two nights on 4/4 and 4/5 for a relative's surgery at Johns Hopkins. First of all, I would like to say that every staff member we dealt with was extremely helpful and accommodating and the hotel was very clean. I was aware of the parking situation before we arrived, but it is still kind of a pain - not a deal breaker for staying here, you just need to be aware that there is a possibility that there may be no parking on-site or on the street across from the hotel, and have a back-up plan. We were able to move our van into the parking lot in the morning, so it wasn't a huge deal. The shuttle service to Johns Hopkins was fantastic - saved us paying for parking there and they were on-time exactly both days. The breakfast was also very good - MUCH better than the Sleep Inn right next door. If you are contemplating the Sleep Inn or Holiday Inn Express - I'd go with this hotel - it's much more comfortable (AND QUIET) and both hotels have the same parking situation. Our one complaint was that our toilet kept clogging repeatedly (another guest we spoke with had the same problem), but the staff did offer us another room on our same floor so that we could use a bathroom. So, I really can't complain - we even had to evacuate the hotel at 2:30 am on our second night for a false fire-alarm and I'd still return. It's not a hotel I'd go to for vacation, but it served it's purpose and was clean and convenient...

Room Tip: The rooms on Fallsway seemed louder than the rooms beside parking lot....
