Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

Bonaventure is a beautiful cemetery with lots of history and famous people laid to rest there. Would recommend a guided tour to understand the history of the development of the cemetery along with the various people buried there and architecture.

We went in the day time and you can feel the history in the air. It is really amazing. We enjoyed the long walk and reading about the interesting people buried there Plus pets are allowed!
I am glad we were not there at night!

We enjoyed driving around the long driveways, and taking photos of outstanding sculptures in the cemetary. It's a special atmosphere, with all the ancient live oaks and Spanish moss. Where else could you find a sector dedicated to railroad conductors? Or to veterans of the Spanish American War?

Took Shannon's tour with our two little kids and not only was it the more friendly but the most educational and not at all scary. Our 10 year old and 8 year old talked more about it than we did to their friends and we are very much looking forward to going back during the day. Long walk but Shannon made you forget the walking with his openness, respect and great knowledge.

This Cemetery is filled with interesting markers, history and some very beautiful views of the river in Thunderbolt. The Statuary is impressive and there are a variety of sections to explore for a variety of reasons. I think that the walking tour is a great idea, and having a guide would be very educational, although you can pick up the map and information at the entrance to self-guide. I have been here many times and have painted here at least a dozen times, it is a beautiful and impressive cemetery. Most definitely worth a visit!
