Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

“Fascinating graveyard”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We spent more than an hour exploring the cemetery that is filled with very old headstones of locally famous individuals and families as well as, apparently, regular folk from the 1700s and 1800s. Also ran into a local historian who shared some of his knowledge. Well worth the time.

“Have to visit!”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

Take a tour! It's more interesting to have a tour guide to explain everything of significance. Ordered tickets by phone & met the guide there. Small group on walking tour. Learned a lot od interesting history about Savannah.

“Fascinating and Beautiful”
Reviewed 16 May 2014 via mobile

Beautiful natural setting. What a national treasure. Wish the 'Bird Girl' was still there.
We did the after-hours tour. This tour is a great intro to the cemetery. The guide is quite theatrical. The cemetery and it's stories are the star. Then one can stroll thru the cemetery during the next morning and day, by ones self.
Be aware that the cemetery has strict hours.

“Quiet Serenity”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

One of the most peaceful places I've been. A very large and very old cemetery on the banks of a river. Huge trees, beautiful flowers, and a calm that is almost unheard of in today's hustle and bustle lifestyle. Several famous people buried here. If you are into cemeterys, this place is a must. If you just need a quiet place to collect yourself, this is it!

“Must See!”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

Drove around and also parked to walk a bit. So much to see and explore! The flowers were fantastic and smelled amazing, the wind calmly blew through the trees with spanish moss everywhere...peaceful and good for kids.
