Owner description: Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

A must see if you are visiting Savannah. A beautiful and eerie place, well kept and historic. Massive Spanish Moss trees provide the appropriate ambiance. Easy to get o by car from the historic district. Well wort the short drive. Entrance by donation.

You have to experience this site to truly appreciate the depth of its history. Every thing from colonial to civil war to current times.

They say it is haunted, but I did not se or fee ay hosts but it was late morning so they may have gone back into their graves. I definitely would not venture during the night. Intersting venue. Do not touch the Spanish Moss as it contains chiggers and they bite and crawl under your skin.

Probably one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. And to call it a cemetery doesn't do it justice. Not only are the head stones immaculate, but the spanish moss draping from the live oaks along the river is enchanting. It's as if you step into a different era when you walk into Bonaventure.
