Owner description: The city's oldest cemetery, with family plots dating back to the 1700s.

We visited the cemetery after having a trolley tour of the city. The cemetery would not have been as interesting without some background, which we got from the tour guide. For instance, the Yankees vandalized some of the grave stones, and it was fun looking around for men who were 150 when they died, for example.

The cemetery was very peaceful to walk through! They have a lot of tombstones laid on the back wall of the cemetery that were interesting to look at. Next door to the cemetery is the dueling square, so the unlucky fellow didn't have far to go.

The wall of headstones, some altered by vandals from the war were very serene, when you think of how many people lay in an area unmarked. Great appreciation for one of the most haunted places in America.

We just happened to come across this cemetery. Decided to walk through and look at some of the headstones. Some very important historical figures are buried here. Some of the headstones are so old you can't even read them. The trees with hanging moss that surround the area are just beautiful. We were a family and walked through during the day. I don't think I could handle it at night or a ghost tour, but I'm sure that would be an experience. No cost to enjoy the cemetery. After awhile my kids got bored and it was so hot we continued on, but a nice area for a quick historic walk.

Sherman's boys recreated some of the tombstones with hilarious results. Go all the way to the far east wall and view the stones on the wall.
