Owner description: Designed by British architectural prodigy William Jay in the neoclassical Regency style, the Telfair Academy is a former mansion built in 1819 for Alexander Telfair, son of Revolutionary War patriot and Georgia governor Edward Telfair. In 1875, Alexander’s sister Mary – heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name – bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. After significant renovation by German-born architect Detlef Lienau, whose adaptations included the addition of the Sculpture Gallery and the Rotunda, the building opened to the public in 1886 as the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.

“Wonderful art exhibits”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I thought the art collection was outstanding. Artists I had never heard of but very interesting. Several rooms. Some great pieces there. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't clear the way in which the family lived but it was obviously splendid grandeur from the size of rooms and what few furnishings were about. Remodeling has changed the floor plan. I would have liked a better concept of the original dwelling and
It was off putting no photography. We worked around that.

“Fantastic”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

So glad my son suggested that we visit Savannah museums. TMTA was impressive, we decided not to do the guided tour and take our time visiting the art. JUST LOVED “La Parabola,” a large-scale diptych by Cesare Laurenti. A "must see" it makes you think about stages of life.

“A bit of a confusion”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

We have tried to visit this museum multiple times; however every time there seems to be a snag in viewing their collection. Older buildings have problems, so it is understandable.

The few things we were able to see in multiple visits was great, but overall, we were disappointed every time as things were shut down to powers beyond their control (a water line break, sewage problems or events going on).

We have not given up hope on this museum, and a package deal makes it worthwhile to just check out, but other houses and museums offer better experiences.

“Better collection than one would expect, and larger”
Reviewed 17 May 2014 via mobile

A modest building from the outside, this house/gallery has a fine collection. Particularly the temporary exhibit on the 5th floor with De Koonig, James D Brooks and other paintings.

The three museum pass, particularly at just $5 for students, is highly recommended. Great space to walk through also.

“Well worth the time”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

The three parts of the telfair museum are each well, worth the time to explore. We especially enjoyed the narrated tour of the Owens mansion and our guide was both knowledgable and entertaining.
