Interesting how the square was named after President Madison yet William Jasper stands proudly in the center.

“At the garden in Madison Square”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 April 2013

Named after the fourth US President, James Madison (not NY’s Madison Square Garden), this “Square” is what Southerners call a park. Surrounding it are some of the most important and interesting buildings in the city, including St. John’s Church and SCAD. Laid out in 1837, Madison Square commemorates Revolutionary War Savannah native, Sergeant William Jasper. His deeds date back to the Siege of Savannah in 1779. A monument dedicated to him is at the center, but the granite marker also defines the southern limit of the British defenses. The two cannons on the southern edge represent Georgia’s first two highways. Savannah offers much for budget-challenged tourists, in the form of dozens of Squares rich with history and Southern charm.

I walk almost every square evry day I am off from work. My dog knows where all the water bowls for dogs are in the different parks.

“Another one of Savannah's great squares”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2012

We visited most of Savannah's 23 squares during our trip to Savannah. They are all beautiful and this is no exception. This is another example of the planning that went into this beautiful southern city.
