From the moment we arrived, we were treated royally. We came in just before 8 AM, hoping to just leave our bags, as we knew check-in was late afternoon; we were given breakfast, and, before we finished, were told that our room was being readied. The breakfasts were delicious, as was the afternoon tea. Everyone we met from the staff were ready to do whatever it took to provide us with information, directions, etc. Should we visit Savannah again, this will be the only place to stay.

We stayed at the Ballastone Inn for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon. It was our first trip to Savannah! They were so welcoming and even had a special runner's breakfast before we all had to go to the start line!! The staff is amazing and the inn is spectacular!! Can't wait to go back again!!!

Savannah has a never ending assortment of B&Bs. Historic town homes converted into "intimate" multi-storey inns. Most are pleasant enough. Quaint furnishings, breakfast included, a price point hoovering around $300, and a surprising absence of staffing. They're almost interchangeable. We've stayed in half a dozen over the years on our annual trek to Florida and are still searching for the "perfect B&B."

The Ballastone is hardly perfect. Rather, it falls smack in the middle of the average category, which isn't a negative, necessarily. But it's hardly a descriptor that differentiates the property and stimulates return visits. At least for us.

Rooms are clean and pleasant, the bathrooms -- often an issue in these older properties -- reasonably up-to-date, and the common spaces authentically historic and welcoming. Then there are such details as parking and help with the luggage. Good luck. Unless you arrive early in the day, you'll have to park on the street, which can be hit and miss, Pay attention to Savannah's confusing street cleaning warnings.

If you're a traveler that needs assistance with luggage, prepare for a workout. Again, these institutions are always understaffed, and porters non-existent. Happily, the Ballastone does have an elevator (in the rear), but to reach it you'll have to negotiate steep front steps and schlep your luggage through the inn's main corridor. When we arrived, a misting rain made the front steps treacherous... but happily we were well prepared and carried only small overnight bags.

Breakfast was fine, but again, it's a B&B. So be prepared to share the table, if not the space with your fellow travelers. In our case, this meant sharing space with two women who arrived for breakfast in their pajamas and bathrobes. Oh, boy... Not a pretty sight...

So, we're still looking for the ideal B&B experience in Savannah. Actually, you could do a lot worse than the Ballastone. It's certainly pleasant enough. But don't expect a "first cabin" experience. And don't count on on-site parking -- or help with the luggage. If that's what you want, you'll have to try the Westin across the river, which offers a whole 'nother assortment of hospitality challenges.

Room Tip: Front and side rooms offer the best views -- such as they are.

Savannah indeed provides a never ending assortment of B&B's. We all work very hard here providing the best service and very disappointed in hearing our shortcomings. Since our house, built in 1838 our steps reflect both in form and function those that were laid down in 1838. While stunning they can be hard to negotiate, certainly with luggage. That is why most of our guests come around to the back, assisted by our staff who are normally diligent in helping our guests, quickly through the back and up to all floors, we are one of the only Inns of our size that maintains an elevator to the entire house. We have many handicapped guests who find it so comforting to be able to do so.

You are correct parking is a challenge. Most of the Inns have only street parking and we are so lucky to have nine designated spots which requires cooperation from all, but it seems to work most of the time. Guests particularly are comforted by 24 hour camers for security, but as you say, some guests find that acquiring a parking pass is preferred as they can park all over the city. Watching again, for the street sweepers as we all have to do who live in the historic area. Many a ticket for all of us as residents who forgot and left a car parked on the wrong night!

We are sadden by anyone's disappointing trip and obviously have fallen short of your expectations, please do not think that we are indifferent to your complaints, we take them very seriously. My hope is that you will return to Savannah, and hopefully, find the ideal that you are looking for. Satisfaction is everything is our business,

You mentioned seating, it was so important to me as a frequent Inn guest myself to provide tables for two so that no one had to be seated with strangers as I personally did not like that about most Inns again most guests love that option to be able to dine with their spouse or significant other in private.

We stayed for 3 nights and everything was great. The location is good, the staff was gracious and accommodating and the common areas were very comfortable. We liked our room-comfortable bed, nice linens and amenities. Breakfast and snacks were above average. We highly recommend the Ballastone!

Room Tip: We stayed in Mary Musgrove. Somewhat small but adequate. It is on the third floor but there is an el...

Stayed here for a weekend during the annual Rock and Roll Marathon. We were on the 4th floor in the Mary Musgrove room. Very nice room - clean, very nicely decorated. A bit small for two people but we didn't spend much time in there so it didn't really matter. In retrospect, might have spent a little more on a room such as the Oglethorpe State and had more elbow room or a working fireplace. But all told, well worth the price. The morning breakfast was very nice and also great it was included. The wine and beer prices at the bar were quite reasonable. I also appreciated that they dicourage tipping until you check out - a refreshing difference.

The Inn is very quaint & located in the historic section. The staff were responsive & pleasant. The breakfast was great & the wine & snacks a lot of fun. We would return when we come to Savannah which is a city that has very good restaurants of many varieties.

Checked into this B&B during the rock n roll marathon weekend. Overall I was not impressed with this establishment. I have stayed at many B&Bs and know what to expect, especially from one so highly rated. The food was not as advertised, and definitely mediocre at best. Tea and hors d's really aren't at all. The breakfast was nothing special and when you read the choices of all the varieties of tasty items that could be available to only get a plate of items I could get at any continental breakfast (and get a better portion) no wonder I'm disappointed.

After reading other reviews I agree with most of the average ratings. I appreciate the historic charm and character mixed with modern day amenities (elevator was really nice for sore muscles). We stayed in the low country room which probably is one of the lesser desirable rooms based on location at the Inn (basement). It had no ventilation in the bathroom and the smells of the kitchen early in the morning combined with hearing every little squeak and creak of the woods floors above was not restful and woke me up in the morning (yes I know it's a historic building but still). the street noises that people mentioned in previous reviews were fine, you are staying in a city, you are going to hear street noise but to hear the staff moving china around for multiple hours in the afternoon and then in the early morning just took away from the experience.

A few things I really enjoyed and worth mentioning was the bed, the bed linen and bathrobes. The staff was friendly and attentive as well. I guess bottom line is do your research on room location but for the price of this place there is not anything extremely special. Plenty of other places to stay that are more enjoyable.
