This elegant, 2-year-old boutique hotel is a gem. It is conveniently located in the historic district, two blocks from the river and the Factors Walk shops. It is one block over from a small pedestrian shopping mall (no cars allowed). The parking garage is underground. There is a hefty charge for valet parking and a slightly less hefty charge for self-parking, so mentally add that into the room price.
The hotel is surrounded by unique and excellent restaurants. Try Garibaldi's about 2 blocks away for an excellent Italian meal in the evening; Pizza Pie in the same block for fun, made-to-order pizza and salads; and, a 15-minute walk away, an incredible lunch spot called SoHo's, which has THE best tomato bisque soup and grilled cheese sandwich (with 4 different gourmet cheeses) I've ever had. We ate on a chilly, rainy day, and that comfort food hit the spot. We asked 3 different locals for a recommendation for lunch and each one named SoHo's. They were right!
Back to Avia: This trendy hotel is staffed by the most amazing and well-trained people. We did not encounter a single surly person during our three-day stay. Quite the opposite. The staff cheerfully initiated conversations, offered helpful suggestions, were unfailingly polite and even funny, yet knew when to disappear into the background when you wanted to be alone to talk with your friends.
The Sunday morning brunch ($16, which includes your orange juice and coffee) at the hotel was not only hugely convenient, it was scrumptious. And no wait! The chefs encouraged us to watch them creating our meals, and they provided charming conversation as an accompaniment.
The hotel rooms are just lovely. I could have happily moved into and lived in my one-room hosting suite. It had everything I would have needed to make it my new home: a comfy king bed, a balcony with French doors and Plantation shutters, a large-screen TV, complimentary Internet in the rooms, and a kitchen with hardwood floors , a full-size refrigerator, and other amenities. Best of all, the living area had a pull-out sofa, a plush chair with matching ottoman (why don't ALL hotels have ottomans??? After an afternoon of being a pedestrian, you want nothing more than to put your feet up), two other comfy chairs around a small table, and lots of throw pillows. It was a perfect place for friends to chat into the wee hours.
One caveat: Ask for a room AWAY from the square. We stayed Friday and Saturday nights, and youthful revelers who had clearly imbibed at local bars and bistros kept up the pronounced noise in the street outside my balcony until 2:00 a.m. Not the hotel's fault, of course, but you need to know about it. Bring a white-noise machine or something else to help you get to sleep. My friends in a room across the hall heard NOTHING, so the room location really does make a difference.
We all LOVED this hotel and would definitely return. Very well done, AVIA!
