“Great Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2013

Great stay at Springhill Suites in downtown Savannah. Location is great, within a half mile or less from City Market and shops on river street. Both pool and fitness room are a decent size. Hotel was clean and rooms were nice. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: High floors have better view

While the room was big and the location was excellent, there were numerous issues with our stay at the Springhill Suites during 4th of July week. I certainly except more from a Marriott property. We were able to easily walk to the riverfront to view the fireworks and to a number of sites and restaurants downtown. In the room, the sofa had numerous stains on it. Also, I specifically asked for more towels on our second day and even initialed with housekeeping. We never received any extra towels, which we really needed because after even a quick shower, the bathroom floor filled up with about an inch of water. It ran right out the space between the glass door and the edge of the shower. We shoved a towel under the door and this held the water at bay somewhat, but we needed more towels for the floor. Also, the handle to the toilet was cracked in two places, I'm surprised it didn't break completely. On our fourth day the toilet stopped working completely and wouldn't flush and then filled up with water and almost overflowed. There was dust on the baseboards in the bathroom. Most of the trash cans in the hallways were usually filled, whether it was first thing in the morning or late at night. The bathroom on the first floor early in the morning was quite dirty as well, paper towels all over the floor and overflowing from trashcans, not to mention not being very clean overall either. Last but not least, all of our pillows were terrible, the worst pillows I have ever slept on. All of them should have long since been thrown out. There was no support at all and were very lumpy.

We're currently staying at the Spring Hill Suites for 4th of July. Tonight will be our third and final night. The rooms are nice and contemporary. An almost European look to them. A separate water closet is nice for those who are trying to get ready in the morning. Breakfast could be better, but hey, it's free. Today we were able to make mini waffles, which were good. The eggs were better today than they were yesterday and you also get turkey sausage. Assorted breads, fruit and beverages are also available. We did have some problems with the people next to us in room 516. They were extremely noisy and we ended up moving to another room this morning. We were given a room at the end of the hall and it's bigger, so I appreciate the front desk letting us move. As for a review I read below about towels.. every hotel these days asks guests to re-use their towels to save water. If one or two towels is all you need, just leave a note for housekeeping when you leave in the morning and they'll be left for you. Getting a credit for a lack of towels seems a bit much to ask for. Housekeeping has no idea the number of people in your room, so just ask and you shall receive. Parking is $20 a night, but here's a secret.. go to the city's parking office next to the Old Pink House and buy a parking pass for $12 for two days. That's what we did and we were lucky enough to find a parking place right in front of the hotel. You're allowed to park in all of the parking areas that have a two hour limit, excluding yellow zones. Holidays are free, so we're just paying $12 for our three night stay, versus $60 what the hotel would have charged. An extra $48 in our pockets for spending money.. I'll take that. We also used 3 restaurant.com certificates for local restaurants and saved an additional $60. We used one for 17 Hundred 90, Anna's (City Market) and JJ Bonerz on E. Bay St. Will we stay here again? Sure.. for $95 a night (military), it's a great price. Yeah, the breakfast could be better, but it's do-able. Savannah isn't big on breakfast places, so it's good enough to hold you over until lunch. And if you need some quiet, away from screaming kids.. ask for an end room.. it's definitely worth it to ask for it.

The hotel is a short walking distance to restaurants and "hub" areas. Our room and common areas of hotel were clean and the size of the room is nice. Nice pool and hot tub. Hotel staff were friendly. The breakfast is basic, not so good for a vegetarian/gluten free person. Go out for coffee to one of the many great shops, including Coffee Fox.

My family of four chose the Springhill Suites in Savannah because of the location and the price. And the location *is* good -- about six short blocks from the river on the west side of town. You can leave the car and walk everywhere. And the hotel itself is relatively new, which is always a plus. I also liked the layout of the rooms, with a toilet that's separate from the shower and sliding doors to make the best use of space.

However, our experience at this hotel was damaged by a number of things that will keep us from visiting this property again.

1. The beds. They're really, really soft in the middle and very hard on the outside, like a badly cooked piece of toast. Nobody in our family slept well the time we were there.

2. The beds. They call them queens, but they're really doubles. You really need to like the person in the bed with you because the small size and the squishy middle will have both of you rolling to the middle of the mattress canyon before too long.

3. The housekeeping. For four people we had two towels. After the first night, we received only two new towels and no washcloths. No problem - a minor oversight. We made do. After the second night, however, we received NO new towels and NO new washcloths. I didn't realize this until my daughter was getting out of the shower and had to dry herself off with the floor mat.

4. The housekeeping. On the second day, I found my electric razor, well, the pieces of it anyway, all over the counter. It apparently had been knocked to the floor by housekeeping. Was there a note? An apology? Nope.

5. The management. When I went down to complain about these things, they were, again, indifferent. "Oh, let me go get the housekeeping manager..." (who was very apologetic). They dutifully sent someone up with towels and another apology, but, honestly, I expected something more. A minor credit. A call from the manager. Something to tell me they really wanted my business. But I got nothing other than the sense they just saw me as a number.

6. Finally, the breakfast. It's free! And that's great if you like powdered eggs and sausage made of an unidentifiable meat. We ate there the first day, but went out every day thereafter.

Look, this could be a very nice hotel. I love the location and the design. But the staff just doesn't seem to care. There were so many girl scout groups in and out that I began to think that serving girl scout troops is really their focus. They just don't seem to care about individuals or families.

So, if you've got a large group of folks who just want a place to sleep for moderate $$$ and a good location, this is for you. If you are used to better service from Marriott or want a positive hotel experience, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

Jackie S, Manager at SpringHill Suites Savannah Downtown/Historic District, responded to this review, 3 July 2013
Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us on your recent trip to Savannah. I am, however, sorry to read about your experience and the issues you encountered. I can assure you that, while we do host Girl Scout troops throughout the year, that is not our sole focus and we care deeply about each and every group/guest that comes through our SpringHill Suites.

I also apologize that the beds were uncomfortable to you and your other guests. We offer Simmons Beauty Rest beds in all our guestrooms and I have confirmed with our engineers that they are truly queens, not doubles.

In regards to the towels in your room, the SpringHill Suites is a Marriott property and participates in the corporate reuse program which assists in supporting the environmental efforts by allowing guests to reuse their towels. There is a sign placed in each of our bathrooms stating that guests can either hang towels to dry on the rack or leave them elsewhere to have the towels replaced. I do apologize if this was not relayed or that your towels were not replaced by the housekeeping team. Please note that towels are also gladly replaced upon request.

I want to also apologize that your electric razor was knocked off the counter by housekeeping. We are very sorry that this happened and are taking measures to ensure that, should something like this happen in the future, the housekeeping team notifies the manager immediately so that he can address the issue directly with the guest.

Lastly we apologize that you did not enjoy breakfast. We strive to offer a variety of items complimentary to our guests including freshly prepared scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, coffee cake, fresh cut fruit including whole strawberries, vanilla Greek yogurt with a selection of 9 toppings and more.

Again, we are terribly sorry that you did not enjoy your experience however, we would like the opportunity to host you at our SpringHill Suites and make your next visit an excellent one.

Booked because of location-easy walk to the historic district. The rooms are very modern decor-but similar to European business hotels. Unlike usual chain hotels- this one has a small sitting area/office separate from the sleeping area. The toilet is in a separate room from the vanity and showers-each with sliding doors. The founder of the Girl Scout movement's home is just a block away-we were there two days and about 100+ scouts and leaders (mothers) checked in/out. The girls were extremely well behaved-no noise in halls, running, etc. One of the two mornings, however, the breakfast area was over run so left to eat in a local restaurant. We planned better timing for the next day. The hotel also has a concierge-his advice was excellent.
