“Stunning stylish quirky hotel on River St”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

We'd read previous TA reviews so decided to try this one out as a stylish downtown hotel for grown ups and we were really impressed

it's all valet parking being right in the historic district overlooking River St and the Savannah river and is an old converted warehouse looking building so has parking offsite. However, valet was good, quick and on our way out in a rainstorm even packed our cases into the trunk - good service. Front desk was super quick and always helpful with shopping or dining queries.

The rooftop bar is awesome and felt like we were back in Venice sipping cocktails as ships sailed by

Best of all is the stylish decor - unusual dark furniture, BOSE stereo with CD, a great bed and dark bejewelled corridors. Best of all the bathroom was huge and the walk in shower adorned with a velvet curtain (I really tried to keep it dry and hope it lasts!)

We got a great free continental breakfast as Marriott Gold members served in their waterfront riverside restaurant - really lovely. Being greedy we'd hoped for an upgrade to a river view room but didn't get it but that's not their fault! Savannah is a great quirky town, really walkable, very European feeling with a great arts community thanks to SCAD

I cannot recognise the complaints of offhand service on TA here, we had quite the opposite experience. And neither were the rooms noisy - we'd just come from a poorly sound insulated property so our nerves were raw to this but i didn't notice a peep.

We got this for a good value $269 p/n - worth every penny and more if you want a stylish grown up hotel different from a run of the mill bland place - their sister property on Forsyth looked stunning too

Room Tip: river view is excellent

We stayed three nights and couldn't have had a nicer experience. It all started with the friendly staff that greeted us at the front entry upon our arrival. Check in was a breeze and the bellman that brought our luggage to our room was cheerful and very helpful and informative since this was our first trip to Savannah. We had a fabulous corner room with floor to ceiling windows, plenty of seating room, and a roomy modern two sink bathroom. We enjoyed in room dining every morning that was brought to us promptly and was delicious. Every staff member that we came in contact with was peasant and helpful. In the late afternoon we enjoyed drinks and appetizers at the top floor restaurant and bar called Rocks. There were beautiful views of the Savannah river from the outside dining area. We are already planning to return next year.

Room Tip: Corner rooms were the best and offered the most space

During a recent visit to Savannah, our group had dinner/lunch at the Bohemian/River Street area. The valet service was awesome and very accommodating to our special needs! They assisted our group by accommodating our need for handicap parking. The concierge assisted with the delivery and pick up of an electric chair for one of the ladies in our group. The customer service provided by the valet team was exceptional! We were very pleased and wanted to share this experience with others planning to visit the Bohemian Hotel! Thank you again!

There are more negatives than positives, so let's be nice, first.

They politely welcomed us at the door, and they got us into the room early. The reception and porters were, in particular, very nice, professional and efficient.

The location of the hotel is great - on the river in the middle of everything.

There is a rooftop bar and restaurant and then another rest/bar on ground level on River street. Cool design.

Negatives

In Savannah, paying 600 dollars for a hotel room is a joke.

The room (at least ours) smelled like gerbil or hamster food. Strange.

The room walls were thin, you could hear neighbors and people on the street, especially around the weekend.

I could smell people on our floor smoking pot (maybe that should go back in the positives).

Room service was hit or miss - we only ordered one meal - crab cake and the house fries. Crab cake was great, the fries were blech and nto what we ordered (and we asked twice if they were, ,in fact truffle fries).

The valets were a little strange, they had perma smiles on and their eyes looked a little vacant. Kind of spooked us out.

In short, I would not stay here again, but it is still better than the Westin.

Room Tip: If you choose the river side, make sure you ask for a very high room (noise). If noise is an issue...

Dear Crabjunkie,

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay. I am glad to hear that you felt our staff was friendly and professional, and that you were able to enjoy our popular restaurant and rooftop bar. We will definitely share these praises with our staff. I am, however, sorry for the problems that you experienced, and that you did not enjoy your overall visit. We will review the smells that you mentioned with our housekeeping team, as hamster food is certainly not a scent we come across often, and have shared your room service comments with the culinary team. I am sorry that these incidents disrupted your stay.
We would like to gain your trust again by welcoming you back on your next visit to Savannah. Please let me know if I could be of any assistance in making a future reservation.

Regards,

Kurt Englund

we stayed three nights. great location, great staff. Odd decor. Not sure what a Bohemian hinting lodge should look like. I liked it: funky but consistent, much better than most artsy boutique hotels. Pn the other hqdnmy wife hated it. Just too funky.

Room Tip: Ask about the exact room you'll be getting. Like most hotels in recycled buildings, the rooms v...

We scheduled a trip to Savannah over Easter weekend & decided to stay at The Bohemian Hotel. We are Marriott Gold Members so this seemed like a good idea at the time. What a mistake! We got to the hotel around 4pm (I had requested an early check-in). Our room wasn't ready. That was annoying but we patiently waited in the lobby while other guests went to their rooms. There were two reception desks in the small lobby. Our guy didn't think to offer us the complimentary champagne being offered to others by the second reception clerk. So we asked him for some while we waited the 25 minutes or so to get to our room. It was tiny and dark. But that wasn't the bad part. During the night I was being constantly bit by something around my feet and arms. When I woke up there were bite marks visible on my arm. As we left to go explore the city, I told the reception desk about the issue and showed her my arm. She apologized and said they would change our sheets. I was a little surprised that such a high caliber hotel didn't do more to rectify this (Another room maybe? We were told the hotel wasn't totally booked). But I didn't want to make a fuss so decided I would take the clean sheets if that was the best they could do. Now it's important that I mention here that we valeted our car upon arrival. BIG MISTAKE! Overnight a vandal "keyed" our car and several other high end vehicles in the garage where the hotel valets. That afternoon I got a call from the front desk to come down to speak with them for a moment. I thought "OK, now they're going to address the bed situation." Nope. That never happened. Instead, we were told about our car being damaged. But all was fine because the hotel said the parking garage would handle the cost of repairs to our car (more than $1500). After we left that weekend we called the garage and they told us they were not responsible for the damage. We notified The Bohemian. They told us they would give us one night free during our next visit to Savannah to make up for the damage. My husband told them we had no plans to ever stay there again. The GM said he would speak with corporate and call us back. We are still waiting. And will probably have to eat the cost of this. But here's the thing. We frequent Savannah a lot. We have stayed at their sister hotel The Mansion on Forsyth Park and liked it WAY better than The Bohemian. But based on this experience, we will never stay in a Marriott-owned hotel there again. And we are advising our friends not to stay there either. How much money is that hotel going to lose based on not working with us to have our car fixed? And I'm sure the other car owners are also experiencing something similar to us. Bad customer service and marketing (which is my profession) if you ask me! So my advice, beware of the Bohemian...or your visit there might cost you a lot more than you bargained for!

Dear Valerie L,

I am sorry to hear that your Easter weekend was dampened by an unfortunate act of vandalism. As we are in the Savannah Historic District, our space is limited and we contract with the City of Savannah and a valet parking operator to handle our valet parking. With the monitoring of the garage, it is rare to have any incidents to our guest vehicles. We have spent time with the City garage management and the Chatham County Metro Police Department with the goal of catching these vandals. We have identified some suspects and the police department is now taking on this investigation.

We definitely take your comments seriously and do hope that you will reconsider and give the Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront another opportunity.

$300 per night for a dump and I mean a dump. I am a platinum premier with Marriott that was suckered into the reviews of this hotel. Maybe I'm not into the hip hotel scene as many of the reviewers are that laud this place. Small room but told an upgraded corner with a beautiful view of the river. Velvet drapes dividing the bathroom from the "spacious bedroom" area. Toilet with a great view of the street below. No refrigerator, dirty sheets and AC that thumps on and off. What a dump. Halls are dark and dank, valet parking a joke and the '"art" in the hotel 6th grade 3rd place. I can hear the stools scraping against the roof top bar one floor above. So very cool and hip. We left the Ritz at Amelia this AM on our way home to Atlanta. Huge mistake. This is a disgrace.

Dear Cuffy01,

I am very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your recent stay with us. We pride ourselves on being a unique independent hotel with a Bohemian seafaring theme, situated along the historic Savannah riverfront. We do realize that this makes us quite different from other larger Marriotts, and that our décor like art, means something different to everyone. We do appreciate your loyalty to the Marriott brand and willingness to explore the Autograph Collection. I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations.
