“If you go, you must ask for Captain Dan”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

This looked like an interesting hotel, I went in with friends to have a drink on the rooftop bar. Greeted near the door by the most helpful bellman ever, Dan, sorry I missed you last name. After five minutes with Dan I regretted I didn't stay at this hotel... wow... this guy treated me like a hotel guest even though he knew I was not staying there. But I will be staying there next trip. Dan suggested a few restaurants nearby and was genuinely interested in leaving a great impression with me and my friends. Hope that knee gets better soon, cant imagine working in a brace all day.

The rooftop bar is worth the visit alone, great view, fast and friendly service. Nice location in downtown area, right in the middle of the action.

Dear rickvo,

Thank you very much for taking the time to mention what a great job Dan, our Bell Captain, did for you while visting us at Rocks on the Roof.

His knee is doing very well and he is indeed a great team player. He makes all of our days brighter and we really do enjoy working with him!

Thank you again for the feedback and we hope to see you again soon.

Sincerely,
Jeremy B

We decided to stay here for a 3 night break so that we could explore Savannah. The hotel looked like it was in a good location and the style was more interesting than some of the "usual brand hotels".
When we arrived we were greeted by very polite and attentive car valet staff, who explained how to retrieve our car and also mentioned some of the nearby features and attractions of Savannah. We were not rushed, everything was done in a calm and relaxed, but professional way. The same could be said of our check in, which was actually more of a friendly conversation about the city, the hotel and nearby restaurants (we were ready to eat). Lots of information about tours and attractions but no hard sell, it felt like the staff were specifically focused on making us feel at home and welcome.
The room was big and lovely, we had asked for a high floor and got one, with a view of the river, so we had the interesting experience of large ships passing our window at various times of the day. The style of the hotel and the furnishings are, well, Bohemian, with great attention to detail and we really liked everything from the bedding to the bathroom. We were not disturbed by any noise from either inside or outside the hotel, despite being very close to the elevators.
There was a small but adequate gym and we used it very day to get a good start to the morning.
Location wise, it's in a perfect position, sitting on River street for the bars and restaurants and also close enough to the Historic District to make walking practical.
One small annoyance was the timing of the room servicing, on 2 days we left the room at about 11:00 and were gone for 4 to 6 hours, but the room was still not serviced when we returned to relax before dinner. We even called on the 2nd day to tell that we were leaving and needed the room servicing as it had not been done the previous day (we elected to skip it rather than go out again while it was done).
The rooftop bar was nice enough, with lovely views, we didn't eat there but did have drinks a couple of times. (The 2nd time while waiting for the room to be serviced).
Of course, there is a price to pay, the hotel is no where near bargain basement, but then again you get what you pay for and all charges are clearly shown at the time of booking (including the $25 per day car valet)
We would recommend the hotel for a long weekend or 3 day city break (enough to see the lovely historic centre of Savannah) and we would certainly recommend Savannah as a destination.

I went back to this hotel when visiting Savannah again due to the ambiance as well as the location, You step out of your hotel right onto the riverwalk. You can walk to various restaurants right from the hotel. This was my original plan when I made a reservation to go t the Olde Pink House for dinner. Just before we were leaving, it bagan to pour with lightning etc. The hotel called us a cab, contacted the restaurant and lent us umbrellas so we wouldn't get wet going from the hotel to cab etc. They were wonderful! The check in is great, no standing at a counter here...you sit down at a desk for your check -in. The style is perfect for the name, dark lights with beads greet you as you exit the elevator to go to your room. All the staff is very friendly yet professsional. There is a rooftop louge and we went there for apetizers and drinks. The shrimp appetitzer was really good. The only thing I would change is across the water from the hotel is a very industrial area with cranes etc. Hopefully in time they will dress up that area to improve the view

The location is just unbeatable. You are at the footsteps of the river bank in downtown historic Savannah. There are lots of dining and shopping options within walking distance. The hotel is a boutique hotel and is uniquely decorated. Our headboard is purple velvet and a faux fur animal throw sits at the edge of the bed. The shower is wonderful and has a built-in bench. The decor is what you would expect in a boutique in the finest cities in the world. Some things do need improving, however. The wireless internet is slow. The television has a handful, HANDFUL!, of HDTV channels. At the rates this place gets the internet should be fast. CNN should come in HDTV. There is no pool onsite, you can use the one at the Marriott. There is a shuttle that runs between the hotel and their sister hotel The Mansion at Forsyth. Use the when you need to get from one part of Savannah to another.

We visit Savannah a couple of times each year when we transfer back and forth between our Florida home to our Tennessee mountain cabin. I always pick a property on Bay Street to be in the heart of the action. I had stayed away from the Bohemian because it was usually more than I wanted to pay for an overnight. We splurged this time ($276.00 senior citizen rate) for a city view room. That was the flaw. The city view was a black SUV parked 10 feet from our only window. Our fourth floor room is actually the street level of Bay Street so the valet stores his cars right outside our window.

Other than that the hotel is beautiful with contemporary styles accented with a vintage maritime feel. Room furnishings have a British lilt with old wood appearances, marble table tops and drift wood sconces holding the proper lighting for old people. Our bathroom in room 407 is large and well appointed. WiFi is sufficient in speed and included as is a nice selection of newspapers. There is a roof top bar and a nice small excellent restaurant on the lobby level. My restaurant review will appear in that section of TA under the name of Rocks of the River.

Ann did an admirable job at check in with a bottle of water for the wife and sit down service in a beautiful lobby for the paper work.

I will splurge again on this property, but I will NOT accept a city view room on the fourth floor. I suggest you make the same demands unless you like being in the middle of a parking lot.

The hotel is very nice and we had an excellent stay. The location, next to the river, could not be better. The room was nice and the bed was great. Thanks to Ann Samuel for making our trip a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Rooms with a river view.

As noted by many, the location is great for enjoying Savannah's waterfront and there is a free shuttle that leaves every 30 minutes to the Mansion on Forsyth (the far side of the historic district). Compared to the Bohemian at Asheville, the property does not feel quite as luxurious, with too much dust/wear and tear showing for a hotel of this caliber.
PROS:
Location is steps from water front, shops, restaurants. Easy walking distance from all historic district sites with free shuttle from far side of district. The hotel is on one of the hop-opn-hop off tour stops. Decor is artsy (but quirky). May or may not be to your taste, but is certainly not the usual, which is nice. On site tapas-style roof bar and lower level restaurants are good and convenient. Staff were friendly and helpful - offer complimentary water when you arrive and depart. Will bend over backwards to get reservations and assist with tours. Water view is fun - be aware that this is a "working" river. A number of commercial vessels go by during the day.
CONS:
Price is a bit high for what you get. If location is all you are after, there are a number of other options nearby. This is not a quiet spot, particularly on the river side. You will hear loud ship horns and might be awoken by partiers, street-sweepers, etc. if you are a light sleeper or in a room close to the bar or street (none of this bothered us, but be aware). Valet parking is $25...and the lot must be a fair distance - plan 20 mins to get your car. The parking does not offer electric vehicle/plug-in charging.

Room Tip: Highest rooms are closest to roof-top bar. Those overlooking water will have more noise from ship h...
