Owner description: The Owens-Thomas House is considered by architectural historians to be one of the finest examples of English Regency architecture in America. Inspired by classical antiquity, this style of architecture takes its name from England’s King George IV, who ruled as Prince Regent from 1811 to 1820.The house was designed by the young English architect William Jay, one of the first professionally-trained architects practicing in the United States. The elegant residence was built from 1816 to 1819 for cotton merchant and banker Richard Richardson and his wife Francis Bolton. Mr. Richardson’s brother-in-law was married to Ann Jay, the architect’s sister. Three years after the house’s completion, Richardson suffered financial losses and sold his house, which later came under possession of the Bank of the United States.

“Amazing home”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

This home is amazing. From the slave quarters to the indoor plumbing ( even before the White House had plumbing) to the indoor connecting bridge and the furnishings- this is a must see for historic homes in Savannah. There is so much to say about this fine building, but you really should take the hour for the tour. Your ticket here will also allow you entry to the Telefair Museum and Contemporary Museum ( which is good for up to a week). Unfortunately we were leaving the same day we toured the Owens House and ran out of time to see the others.

“Beautiful house”
Reviewed 2 June 2012

The house was beautiful, our guide had her script learned by rote and didn't know very much else. The house is worth touring, maybe you will be fortunate and have a different tour guide.

“A MUST see.”
Reviewed 1 June 2012

The house in and of itself is remarkable for its time and the guides are VERY knowledgable and professional in how they present the house to visitors. Do not miss seeing this house!

The house is owned and operated by the Telfair Museum and they offer a package price to see the Owens-Thomas House, the Telfair Museum (academy) and the Jebson Center for Modern Art.
