“Great park with lots of amenities”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

My family loves this park. We visit it each time we travel to Savannah. The track around the lake is great. The tennis courts, basketball courts and play ground are also very good. Fishing, picnics, remote control cars...you name it, you can do it there. And, don't forget the wildlife.

“Not impressed at all”
Reviewed 5 May 2014 via mobile

The place has a huge potential, but it is not well maintained.
There you will find legions of pigeons among the ducks and geese, the wood tables around the lake are full of pigeon poop, the lake stinks and the mosquitos… the grass is very uneven and many spots without it… it seems to me that it was an attempt to transform a huge farm in a park… well well it was not a fun moment there…

“Great place for family picnics, very good walking track, pavilion, ducks, boats, fishing and more!”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

I've been coming to this great little local park since I was in high school, so many years ago, and brought my family here for picnics, to feed the ducks and geese, kid's birthday parties in the big wooden pavilion, bicycling and walking around the 11/2 mile paved track. The setting is peaceful, the lake is man-made but well-kept and stocked with fish, there is a pier for fishing and a big round pavilion where many groups can hold parties at one time--two of them, actually, which can be rented. Out under the trees are concrete picnic tables and we've spent many a fine afternoon laid out on the grass, watching clouds go by, listening to the ducks quack, enjoying a sunny picnic in spring, summer and fall. There is a softball/baseball fields, several lighted tennis courts, and a race-track for soapbox derbies, as well as a dog-exercise area, handball practice court, hockey rink, volleyball nets and a playground. For boaters, there is a concrete boat ramp easily accessible on the Montgomery Crossroads side. All year round families and sports lovers, walkers and bikers, photographers and artists find plenty to do here for a few peaceful hours. I especially like the paved track that goes all the way around the lake, which I've used many times for walking at all hours of the day, or bicycling. Only seeing-eye dogs are allowed on the track, but I've seen them romping around the picnic grounds. There are bathrooms available in the wooden office building out by the pavilion, as well as a porta-john on the other side of the lake (in case the urge hits during your walk/run/ride), and I've always found TP there when I needed it. Check the City of Savannah Leisure Services website for events held here year-round, such as concerts, festivals and sports games. Also take a look at the bulletin boards up at the office to see what classes are being held there weekly, such as yoga and zumba. There is one small bridge that goes over the lake and onto the island in the middle where everything is located, and a gate that closes around 11pm, but the track that goes around the lake is open any time--I've ridden my bicycle out there quite late at night, and been perfectly safe. Early morning, especially as the weather begins to cool a little, can be busy with morning walkers, but the crowds thin out a little as twilight sets in. Frogs croaking, crickets singing, the wind in the trees, ducks waddling about leaving little fluffy feathers on the ground, the sound of tennis balls hitting rackets, radios on a lazy afternoon as picnickers enjoy their meals, and groups of parents and kids feeding bread to the ducks....such is Lake Mayer--I look forward to enjoying it for many years to come!
