Yes, you will wait in a long line if not super early (we waited and chatted with others 1.5 hrs) after arriving at 11AM (when they open)
Yes, they only take cash and do not take reservations
Yes, you will sit at a community table (which I enjoy dinning with locals during the week) or you can bring your own peeps (10pp/table)
Prepare yourself for a Southern Mama's, everything homemade, Sunday cooking: The table will be set loaded up with sides when you walk through the door (The day we came it was corn pudding, baked beans, field peas, sweat potato casserole, cheesy potatoes, macaroni and cheese, squash, rutabagas, green beans, white beans, peas and noodles, collard greens, jambalaya, cabbage, pickled cucumber, macaroni salad, potato salad, biscuits and cornbread...) and then the meats of bbq pork, beef pot roast, and FRIED CHICKEN is the star here. Don't be shy...you can ask for more of anything you run out of, too. Dessert was Banana pudding and Peach Melba. Laughter is inevitable as all are challenged to finish the food on the table.
Yes, you will clear your plate for Mama!
Yes, it is a one stall co-ed bathroom just like your Momma's house (complete with can of spray - ha!)
At the register you will find her cookbook and a Savannah Walking Tour Book for 5.95 (worth the spend - ditch the trolly)

Tip: Pace yourself on the sides (like samplings and then eat what you like best) or you may not have room for the main.

I honestly did not understand - or apppreciate - how lucky we were to have been able to simply walk into Mrs Wilkes House without a wait and experience such an institution.

We were seated with a beautiful family from Jacksonville who nhad come to Mrs Wilkes for their daughter's birthday. The food was true southern comfort food and waaay too plentiful! Eating family style is a perfect touch to put away the cell phones and TALK to your fellow table.

Learn about Mrs Wilkes before you go, I promise you will gain a better appreciation of your visit to Mrs Wilkes. The food? Wow...just wow, and dont forget your cash! Its cash only and the closest bank is few blocks away. :)

When we first came to Savannah back in 98. we found this place just by happenstance.
My wife and I were walking around town and happen to walk by this place , it looked like a hole in the wall. Went in to have lunch and were seated, it was near closing time and we had a table with another couple the waitress asked if Mrs Wilkes. could sit with us.
We thought nothing of this, couple years later we happen to move to Savannah that's when we realized we had ben in the company of a legend.
She was a super nice lady we talked till closing, this was one of the reasons we moved to Savannah.

We arrived at 10am and there was couple ahead of us. By 11 there were at least 30 people on line. We sat at the table closest to the kitchen. A few of the employees sat with us. They sparked up conversation at the table and were very happy the give advice on all thing Savanna. The food is extraordinary. The Fried Chicken is the best that I've ever tasted. There was also what tasted like Barbecue Brisket tat was delicious. Black Eye Peas, potatoes, mac and cheese, it goes on and on. Make this you main meal of the day. I didn't have room for dinner. All for $25.00. Can't beat it.

Plan for this visit. $25 a head - CASH or check only. Be ready and hungry. Otherwise, you will still eat and overfill. This food is fantastic. Have been there twice in the past two weeks. BEST fried chicken I have ever had. But there are plenty of other options. Too many bowls to find space on the table! Just keep them moving around the table. A nice light coating. Served family style to a table of about 10. We lined up the first time about half hour before opening and made it into the initial seatings. By the time the last table is seated, the first table is on their dessert so the wait our second time (arriving 15 minutes before opening) was not too bad. The ONLY dish that I didn't like was the cucumbers. I love cucs but this bowl seemed like somebody dropped the salt shaker into it. Otherwise, there wasn't a dish that I didn't try and love. Added attraction: We got a visit to our table by Mrs. Wilkes' grand daughter! Awesome. Thank you folks.
