“Great view, stylish hotel”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

Facing Forsyth Park, a huge park with a stunning fountain and outstanding foliage. Quiet neighborhood - a distinguished residential feel. Valet parking - top-notch, warm, efficient service.

Building facade is unique. Lobby and artworks strewn around the hotel stand out. Thoughtful touches abound all over the property.

Our room faced the park - the view from the windows is sensational - very serene. Loved the ottoman and the chair. The beds are very comfortable. Bathroom is roomy and stylish. Great whirlpool to melt away the stress - specially with the bath salt.

Dining at 700 Drake quite good - we had just one dinner there.

Walked to the riverfront multiple times - a pleasant 20 minutes walk. There is a shuttle as well.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the park on a higher floor.

I'd rate this hotel a B-. I stayed 6/29/14-7/3/14.

Let's start with the good. If you arrive later in the afternoon the front desk has the most amazing chocolate chip cookies I have ever tasted. It's like those Macy cookies they talk about and try to copy. I'm not a chocolate chip cookie fan but these have ruined it for all others. They also have fruit and cucumber infused water very refreshing.

The concierge level is wonderful. I highly recommend adding this to your room or staying on the 4th floor. They serve continental breakfast from 6:30am-10am and then late munchies from 5-8pm, not dinner things like mini egg rolls, meatballs, fresh fruit, dessert, cheese, coffee, tea, etc. This saves you more money than you'd think. You don't have to worry about breakfast and if you don't have a microwave or frig in the room you can use the one in the concierge lounge. You also have access to the lounge for your entire stay. It was really great. I will check every hotel I have for this service. The young adults covering the lounge are so sweet, they all look about 22 and were really nice except for the girl who was busy filing her nails on the morning of July 3rd. Really sweetheart if your nails are that important maybe you should work in the spa and not the lounge.

The front door staff is so friendly and kind. The guys are really nice. One of the front desk staff members is nice and the other one when we checked-in on Sunday needs hospitality training. More about that in the bad part of the review. Also, we loved that the elevator took you directly to the spa-level and you didn't have to walk through the lobby to get to your room. Some hotels don't have a private entrance to their spa and you have to walk in your robe in front of everyone after a stress-free massage. Also, the staff at 700 Drayton was lovely. The strawberry chicken salad, with peanut brittle, biscuits and sweet tea were perfect. ($8 Tour special menu - ask for it if you go on the trolley tour and have your sticker or receipt. It was a great lunch.)

Our room was the queen/queen deluxe, a last minute upgrade. Nice but gaudy. The room faced the park so we could people watch all day. Forsyth Park is beautiful except for all the hanging Spanish moss. It looks pretty until you know it's secret and then you'll be paranoid about it when you walk under it. LOL!

Now the bad...We check-in on 6/29/14 around 4:30pm. We had been up since 5am and been traveling all day. I had made the reservation in March 2014 and called a week ahead of our arrival to make sure we had an enclosed bathroom, two beds and the reservation was all set. I was assured it was. Come to check-in and I'm told my room wasn't ready. First they said it would be 5-10 minutes, then after that I went back to the front desk and asked how much longer and they said they had no idea. The excuse, they had a lot of people checking out earlier and the staff hadn't had a chance to clean the rooms. That was there excuse! Your computer system didn’t tell you how many people were checking out that day so you could staff appropriately? How could someone even acknowledge that lack of preparation? I asked if they could call and find out an ETA and was told she could call but the staff wouldn't know and we'd just have to wait. WHAT? I'm the guest right and its part of your job to make my stay enjoyable right. This was not hospitality. My mother stepped in and let them know this was unacceptable and that's when the other desk clerk stepped in and upgraded us to a better already prepared room and added our already paid for concierge level to the deluxe room. Now that was service but the other desk clerk needs additional training.

Secondly, the cleaning staff was slow the entire stay. We were on the 2nd floor and they didn't clean our room at all the first day and then didn't come until late in the afternoon on the 2nd day. They were nice people but it felt like they were very understaffed. The decor is gaudy. It's like someone saw pictures from an antebellum bordello and thought that's how they wanted the hotel to look. There was crushed velvet, dim lighting, Peter Keil paintings-bad imitation of Picasso, marble on the floor and walls, buckling carpet and fur throws everywhere. The outside is beautiful but the inside was too gaudy. The bathroom doesn't have a door, it has curtains. Huh? You can hear everything but after a while it's no big deal. We’re family so it was fine.

Lastly, you pay for everything. The bath salts cost $25, bath gel $20, even the robes in the closet cost money, the bottled water in your room cost money. So you have a coffee/tea maker but you have to pay for the water to make it. Like I said spring for the concierge and you can get all the coffee, tea, etc without pulling out your wallet every time you want to drink anything. The one drink I had, a cranberry Kettle, cost $10! My mother's apple martini cost $10.50. They weren't even good and cost us $20.50, more than our meal. Even the spa's manicure cost triple what you'd pay anywhere else. Unless they guarantee that nail polish will stay on for a month I'm not paying more than $25 for a manicure.

All in all we had a good stay but I stayed at the Bellagio in Las Vegas 3 years ago and I can't wait to go back. This location was wonderful and quiet, although the locals use the street in front of the hotel as some sort of drag race. I'm serious about that. If you have kids do not let them get away from you and run towards that street because they fly pass and rarely slow down. A cop had to chase down a motorcyclist right in front of us at 11:30 am while we were waiting for our tour trolley. Oh, and all the tour trolley's stop at the corner of the hotel. The white, orange and blue. So if you’re worried about transportation during the day, trolleys are right there. But beware things shut down early in Savannah, except restaurants, around 6pm.

I hope this and the pictures help. Safe travels.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the park if you like to people watch.

The hotel is just across from Forsyth Park, an expansive and well maintained public area. We also walked to City Market and the Riverfront from the hotel so the location is great for visiting Savannah. However, the rooms are rather small and the price point higher than necessary. The staff was friendly.

Savannah is great city to visit and Forsythe park is great park to visit. The hotel suits across from the park and near the trolley run pickup. The hotel is gorgeous and the rooms are well designed. This is a great place to stay and the service is excellent.

Loved the location, ambience and staff. It's a nice stroll through the historic district to the river area, but it is also a nice retreat from the more crowded river area.
Parking is free on the street around the corner from the hotel.

Stayed here for our honeymoon. On a Tuesday several 40 year old age men took over the very small pool bringing coolers with them and loud music. They chugged beer and vodka blaring loud music for hours disturbing all other guests. After complaining to the staff nothing was done about the drunk men. You would expect better of a hotel such as this but apparently they find drunk, beer and vodka(Grey Goose) chugging for hours acceptable.. The drunker the men became the more profanity they seemed to yell. Again, hotel did nothing to stop it.

Many Savannah hotels are clustered near the riverfront and it is a shame to think this elegant property might be overlooked because it borders the historic district on Forsyth Park. That is exactly why it should be chosen over all the others in its class. The hotel offers immaculate, quiet, well appointed guest rooms with several lovely areas in and around the hotel for sitting, getting coffee, eating or having a glass of wine. The concierge lounge is small but offers wine and some snacks every afternoon as well as a continental breakfast every morning. The staff is courteous and always available to help. It is wonderful to stroll into the park and sit by the fountain, vicariously watch someone's wedding or children playing, or go in either direction to experience what Savannah has to offer. The property was designed to blend in perfectly with the historic building next door (which was the original mansion and now has a bar and restaurant) and is decorated with eclectic art throughout. There is a gift shop with some unique choices and a helpful manager who is also well informed abut the owner's other properties, art collection and the history of the hotel. Worth the walk from the tourist and crowded Riverfront area!

Room Tip: Rooms that do not overlook the inner courtyard may be a little quieter. We enjoyed seeing the weddin...
