“Nice, but could be better”
Reviewed 10 March 2009

My wife and I found a deal from Travelzoo and decided to stay there for 4 nights in January. We were pleased with the cordual service of it's staff however, we were less than impressed with the room(s). The first room they put us in had a king sized bed butted next to the bathroom doors that opened up to the tub. there was only one night stand and lamp for two people....most places give you a two nights stands and lamps for a king sized bed. The lighting in the room is very poor and dark; great for mood lighting, but not so great if you're in your 40's and trying to read a book. The room they gave us had lots of scratches, dents, and fixtures needing repairs. Unfortunately they used cheapie Home Depot/Lowes fixtures, that are fine for home use, but just doesn't hold up for commercial applications. Also, they give you nice fluffy robes to wear for your shower or bath, but good luck trying to find a hook to hang it! you would think that with all the planning they must have done in remodeling these rooms that someone would have the sense to put a hook for your bathrobe.

I complained to the management reagrding all the problems, and they did manage to change us to a better room, i think #409. this was a much better room however, still no hook for your bath robe!

I will say that the king sized bed and bedding was very clean and comfortable with no signs of bed bugs. we had a great night sleep once we got settled into a better room. Beware, the management sees what kind of a deal you can get on the web and will often put you in the worst room thinking you won't complain, or shouldn't complain since you are getting such a good deal. I found this common with other hotels as well. just because you got a deal doesn't mean you should settle for less!

My husband and I took a long weekend trip to Savannah and were able to stay at the Mansion using some frequent club points. At the risk of sounding snooty, we tend to stay at 4-5 star hotels on our frequent trips, both domestically and internationally and so have a context in which to judge one. While we were impressed by the decor, service and facilities, and would almost give it a 5-star rating, a few things hold us back. The resort fee was a big nuance for us. It is not a resort in the way one thinks of one. Yes, the facility has a restaurant, spa, and even a cooking school but none of which offers special amenities because you are a guest. Anyone can take advantage of this. Besides, what upscale hotel does NOT offer a celebrated restaurant and spa? The other nuance for some may be the location -- it is not centrally located and as New Yorkers, we don't mind walking around, but we could see how this can be an issue for those who may feel the need to take a taxi for the 1.5 mile into the touristy River Street area. That said, they do offer a car service which does pickups and dropoffs and is a great service. But this is part of their "resort fee" which should be complimentary as a way to compete with other hotels. Also, there is only "1" car that services the entire hotel, so if someone else has reserved the hotel before you, you're out of luck and need to call for a taxi. Lastly, as a resort, they never once replenished the toiletries during our stay. Okay, so maybe they're being green. But secondly, we had to call for our complimentary bottles of water every night. It wasn't even an option to buy bottled water from the mini-bar as there weren't any. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the hotel staff was courteous and helpful. But we felt they needed to better understand what a 5-star hotel meant in order to market themselves as such.

We used Priceline and bid on a 4 star hotel and they took our bid of $105. The room was outstanding and the powder room/bathroom was very pretty/surprising. Crystals hung from light fixtures, small lighted crystal chandlier above chair and ottoman. The only negative that griped me was there is a $12.00 a day automatic charge to your room for their amenities (use of their business center, fitness room, etc.). Even though we went through Priceline we still got the charge plus tax for everyday we were there. It's not the $12 a day that griped me its that its automatic and it's not negotiable. Two more things, valet parking is $19 a day (just to have your car parked behind the hotel), we took a tip from another reviewer and parked on the street for free. There is free parking on three sides of the hotel. One last thing, we spent $115 (including tip) in their restaurant and I DID NOT LIKE MY MEAL. My husband said his was okay. We did not take the advice of a reviewer on this one and ate there anyway. Don't bother. There are better places to eat for less $$$. Try Corleone's for italian, Angel's BBQ (very tiny place only 3 tables, but its good GA BBQ), we had a very good meal at Uncle Bubba's (seafood). We did not eat at Paula Deen's although we did go to the gift shop and walk into the restaurant. It didn't get good reviews online. She and her sons are not the ones doing the cooking. One local told me Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse is the place to go instead of Paula Deen's. Be sure and go to Tybee Island if you have time. Try the Cafe Loco for shrimp.

The hotel is nice enough, with huge rooms and over-the-top decor. The location isn't great, there's a fair amount of street noise, and the restaurant is next door. To my great annoyance, I learned at check-in that the hotel imposes a rip-off $12.00 "resort fee" to cover newspapers, in-room coffee (with Coffee Mate) and the fitness center, among other standard hotel amenities.

Absolutely loved everything about the hotel room except the size. We had an extra child and had requested a rollaway bed. The bed did not really fit the room. We managed though. The bathroom is beautiful and modern. The help is very helpful and friendly. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent. They have everything to help you feel pampered on the premises. Only issue was the Park was under construction and was not as beautiful as it could have been. Also, not convenient to River Street if that's where you want to be.

A very enjoyable weekend was had by my husband, parents, and me to celebrate my mother's birthday. The staff was really incredible - gracious, accomodating, unfailing polite, and provided excellent service with a smile.
Thank you to Sari McAfee and the other woman concierge (sorry I do not have your name) who assisted us in many ways, to Lionel at the front desk, who was kindness personified, the bellhops, doormen, & valet attendents (although we did not avail ourselves of this service, but chose to street park), the kind man who delivered a mini fridge to our room at 11 pm, the cleaning staff, the pleasant bartenders at Casmir's Lounge - you are all to be commended for your professionalism. The staff even located a small round table and extra chairs for my parents so we could play Mahjong in their room!
We found on excellent rate on Travel Zoo back in November or December which also included the resort fee, so our accomodations were very reasonably priced & the Mansion is quite magnficent - the artwork is mesmerizing! The bathrooms are sleek & modern looking with a glass door fronting the toilet area. Be careful opening & closing the door; on one dark, nighttime visit, I opened the door over my toe - ouch!
The room was luxurious with the most comfortable bed, complimentary bottled water, and lovely toiletries (Gilchrist & Soames). Some of the other guests were a bit noisy on Friday night (loud music & I think some people returning from a haunted pub tour!), but the next night was very quiet.
We were never able to use the spa (tried to make a reservation too late & they were booked) & we intended to use the fitness room, but we ran out of time (we walked a lot though). Casmir's Lounge was a nice place to have a quick bite when we checked in & for a before dinner drink; we intended to go back for the jazz on Friday/Saturday, but did something else came up. We never tried the restaurant, but saw people who had been there for dinner who'd enjoyed it.
We did have a lovely meal at Local 11 Ten which we walked to from the hotel (~5-8 minutes) and an incredible meal at Noble Fare (used the Town Car service provided by the hotel). We walked to the Firefly Cafe (charming) for breakfast one day and walked a couple of minutes to Sentinent Bean for breakfast the day we checked out (great coffee and baked goods). We did a tour with Explore Savannah (wonderful!) & walked all over Savannah - toured the Owens-Thomas house & the Telfair Academy & "forced ourselves" to have ice-cream at Leopold's! Great trip!

Beware bathrooms,no privacy, slippery floor, no place to hang towels. Just poorly designed. Parking $20 a day and not well organized town car service. However, the best hotel bed I ever slept in.
