“New Management, Same Great Experience”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

When a favorite Inn changes ownership/management, it's typical to wonder if the establishment will become the victim of cutbacks or downgrades in service. I was very happy to find that the Hamilton-Turner Inn is still a fantastic place to stay in Savannah. Obviously, the amazing location hasn't changed (the historic district is completely walkable from here; no car needed). The rooms were still spotless and well-maintained, and the staff was still extremely attentive to the guests without being overbearing. The breakfasts were fantastic, too; the standard items include yogurt, homemade granola (which was delicious), fresh fruit, and muffins. The hot entrées were tasty too, especially the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes. If you are visiting Savannah, I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful and historic Inn. You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: The last few times I have stayed in the lower/basement area (Rooms 101 & 105). Although the room...

We stayed in the spacious Earl of Chatman room. The room was large with two very comfortable beds, a sitting area with two chairs and a love seat. The bathroom was huge and very nice! We had one large closet and one small closet. Perfect for us four ladies to hang up all our clothes. This room is located on the top floor. No elevator. We were okay with that! Great exercise going up three flights of stairs! We had a wonderful employee, Wallace, carry all our luggage up to our room. Everyone was so nice and helpful with making us feel right at home in this lovely mansion. Brian was very helpful in making reservation for restaurants and tours. The happy hour and a half was a great way to meet the other guests and visit about our day in beautiful Savannah. The morning we left we had to be gone by 5:45 am....we were greeted with coffee, sweet bread, muffins, fruit and granola to go! Plus our luggage was carried down by the night desk man. This was great service!! I would highly recommend this beautiful, historic Inn. Thank you for a great get away from the South Dakota Girls!

Room: We stayed in the Isaac Davenport room, which is in the basement of the Inn. It has two entries (one within the Inn and one from the street). It was great to have the street entry - it is the entry directly to the left of the front porch, downstairs. The room was small, but functional and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We could hear noise from the street, but not too much. There was was noise upstairs in the morning, when people were up and about. This room is right below the parlor, where coffee and tea are served in the morning. On the other side of the house is the kitchen and another guest commented that her room below the kitchen was quite noisy early in the morning. There are a couple small windows at the sidewalk level, but the front window was set back from the street and the side window faced Macon St., which didn't seem to have many pedestrians, so the room was quite private. The bathroom is fairly spacious, though the tub/shower is small - I wish there was a shower rod that keeps the top of the curtain further away from the tub, which would create more space and be more comfortable as I don't like other people's shower curtains to touch my body. There was a single sink with not much counter space. My complaint about the room is the lighting - being below street level with small windows, there already isn't much natural light coming in. The lamps and bathroom lighting were inadequate light sources. I'm not sure why they don't put a brighter, full spectrum bulb in at least the bathroom. If you intend to put on makeup, you may want to step outside to apply it, or at least check it!

Location: It was nice to be at Lafayette Square, a peaceful park right in front of the Inn. And right next to the St. John cathedral. Parking was easy on Macon St., but be sure to read the signs b/c you need to move your car some nights for the sweeper. It was a 7-15 minute walk to anywhere and I think a quieter part of town than staying near the water or on another block.

Food: Breakfast was OK. A bit too salty. Dining room was nice and there are separate tables for each couple. Each night, you have to specify which time you will show up for breakfast - 8, 8:30, 9, etc. I think breakfast is over at 10 am. It was nice to have tea, wine and hor doeuvres available in the parlor.

Service: Everyone was very nice and helpful.

Ghosts: Didn't see or hear any, though we heard the house is haunted. There are many tours in Savannah and this house is a stop on the tour b/c of the history (first house to have electricity) and ghosts.

Overall: I'd recommend this place if you want an Inn experience. Location is nice, room is *extremely* small, but comfortable. If you are going to stay downstairs, it is better to be below the parlor where this room is, rather than below the kitchen. Lighting needs improvement, though.

This is really an exquisite inn- we enjoyed our stay. It was our first visit to Savannah and our choice for accommodations did not disappoint. This gorgeous mansion is located in historic downtown and within walking distance to most everything. The building and furnishings in the common areas as well as the rooms are beautiful. The owners and staff are very friendly and welcoming. Luxurious- every detail taken care if. Breakfast is a treat in every sense of the word. I couldn't imagine anything that would have made our stay any better. We'll be back for sure.

If you want to see what it's like to trip with Savannah high society, stay a few nights in this beautifully appointed inn on Lafayette Square. We loved our high-ceilinged beauty on the 2nd floor overlooking the park. Coffee, wine or port keeps conversation lively in the parlor, and the staff is gracious and always ready to help. Michael suggested intriguing off-the-beaten-path new local fave restaurants which we loved. The Hamilton-Turner is a treat on a gorgeous street.

Having mainly stayed in hotel chains (albeit reliable and comfortable ones) before arriving here, this was a breath of fresh air. Old world charm in a secluded area not far form one of Savannah's many small squares. Helpful staff too - notably minding our luggage after we had arrived slightly early - and a traditional breakfast that was way beyond the bland buffets that had mainly preceded our arrival here. Only downside, the parking complication in the surrounding streets, but that's hardly the hotel's fault.
