Let me start with telling you that I have stayed in many Inns over the years so I have a lot to compare to. In Savannah I have also stayed in the Hamilton-Turner Inn and The Kehoe house and both of these inns are far better choices in my opinion.
This visit when we arrived there was no one at the inn who could help us carry our bags up the outside stairs and then to our room on the second floor (I was traveling with my 77 year old mother who has a shoulder injury and was not able to carry hers up the stairs). We managed to get our bags into the inn and the front desk person called the inn keepers to come and carry our bags to our rooms, took them about 45 minutes to get to the inn.
During our last stay in March of 2016 we were told by the staff that the inn had been recently purchased and the new owners were planning on freshening things up. The whole inn at that point was in dire need of a good face lift. The rooms we stayed in both in 2016 & 2017 needed a thorough cleaning and fresh paint. The rooms weren't filthy but for what we were paying a night one would hope that little details such as removing dirt and make up from the switch plates or cleaning the blinds would be done. Broken tiles that were not secure in the bathroom floor during our first stay were a problem too. We were disappointed that nothing had changed since out last visit.
The bed was OK but not overly comfortable, they definitely need to invest in new sheets. New mattresses would be nice too. Plus the king bed in our room was high and could of used a step. There are no area rugs in any of the rooms all hardwood floors. Would of been nice to have at least a rug under the bed to step out onto.
Most inns that charge similar rates that I have stayed in offer bottled water in their rooms, it's a nice touch. Also, bathroom soap could use an upgrade.
The breakfasts were inedible. During our five day stay we only had one decent breakfast and that was prepared by Jerry. As an example, one morning our breakfast included english muffins, mine arrived and it hadn't even been toasted. The others in my party also noted that their muffins were barely toasted. Also, the person who was setting our table, although very pleasant, needs a few tips on handling silverware. She had a handful of wet silverware that she was drying with a paper towel at the same time holding the forks and spoons on the eating end. All this occurred as she stood next to our table, very unappetizing.
The front porch is the best part of the inn, it's fun to sit and watch the goings on in the park. That said, there are a couple of rooms whose windows are on the porch. One evening as we were enjoying the porch we noticed that we were able to see into one of the rooms. The guests were in their bed reading books and had no idea we could see them, from their side they couldn't see us because they thought they had the blinds closed properly. I would think the inn could invest in some pull down blinds or some alternative to what is currently on the windows to allow their guests privacy, I would of been extremely embarrassed if that were my room!
When checking out there was nobody available to settle our bill and we had to leave for the airport. It might be nice if the inn keepers checked with their guests to see what time of day they are checking out to make sure that their bills are settled before they leave. We needed to leave by 8am.
The saving grace for this inn is the staff. Both Dwayne and Jerry are very gracious and charming. I think this inn has the potential to be one of the best in Savannah, it's in a great location. Hopefully the new inn keepers will make some changes but until that happens I'm afraid we won't be staying there again.
