“Excellent Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2011

We found the Marshall House excellent in all ways. The location on Broughton St is perfect for walking the historic district. The service personnel were ALL helpful and very friendly. The historic nature of the hotel added extra charm to the stay. Our room was a little small by today's modern hotel standards, but was well maintained and adequately modernized. Charming old stairways and one small elevator take one to the upper floors. The covered courtyard breakfast was very good, and daily afternoon wine and cheese was a nice plus. Overall, we feel that our first visit to Savannah was greatly enhanced by our choice to stay at the historic Marshall House. We will return to this hotel on our next visit.

We chose this hotel for it's location in the middle of the bustling city area near the riverfront, and it's high rating on Trip Advisor.

CONS:
1. Noise-
Since it's an old building on a busy street, I was worried about hearing street noise, and guests in adjacent rooms and walking on the wood floors above. Thankfully we were given a room on the top floor at the end of the hall at the very back of the hotel ( #409) so neighbor-noise and street-noise really weren't issues. One evening I did hear our neighbors talking in the hall and in their room briefly, as well as a few clanking sounds like luggage being plopped down on the floor and soap being dropped in their shower.
The worst thing about this room was the sound the air conditioning makes while running. When it cycles on, the fan/blower is very very loud the entire time. So you go from a nice quiet room to the roaring whoosh of the system while running it's cycle, then quiet, then on-cycle, over and over and over. I tried leaving the system's fan on constantly but it was just so loud that it didn't provide the white noise I was hoping for. Maybe a pair of ear plugs would have helped??

2. Bathroom-
Very tight. We had one of those corner neo-angle shower stalls with thin glass doors. The crank-knob style faucet for the shower didn't turn off very tightly so the shower head dripped unless you tightened it with all your might, which meant struggling to get it back on the next time. The sink faucets had some tarnish on them, too.

3. TV-
Although it was a nice flat panel tv, in this room it was placed on the wall BESIDE the bed so that it was mounted above the fireplace. You have to lay on your side to view it or else orient yourselves across the bed to face it directly.

4. Happy Hour-
No wine and cheese reception on Friday/Saturday afternoons.

5. Service-
The Concierge on duty when we checked in was not very helpful in suggesting activities and restaurants. Luckily we did some research before our trip so we kind of knew what we wanted to do and asked him about those specific places. HOWEVER, CHARLES at the front desk is a sweet and helpful young man, and you should take questions and reservation requests to him if at all possible!

Nightly turn-down service was only done the first night we were there. Could have been poor timing that we were in the room when they came around so we were just skipped altogether??

PROS:
1. Location-
Steps from all the shops, restaurants and threaters along Broughton and Bay Streets; 2 short blocks from the riverfront area; an easy walk west to City Market and even uptown to Forsyth Park. We highly recommend the Pedi-Cab (bicycle-pulled cart for two) to get you around when you're tired of walking. They'll page one from the hotel for you, and you can either call from wherever you are or flag one down for a ride back. You can even ask for one that does a tour (30 and 60 minute options).

2. Breakfast-
We really enjoyed this hotel's breakfast in a lovely enclosed atrium room, offered during a nice long block of time (7:30 to 10:00) for maximum flexibility. Many bagel, muffin and quiche choices were offered as well as milk and cereal, fresh fruits, fruit salad, granola bars, yogurt, biscuits and pastries. We were perfectly full without being miserable so sight-seeing right after was not a problem.

3. Character of the Building and Room-
This was important to us, as we wanted to stay somewhere unique and historic. Savannah is so charming, so we wanted to avoid the chain hotels but were a bit too shy for a Bed and Breakfast. The Marshall House provided that perfect in-between experience.

Since this was our first stay in Savannah, we don't have much of a measuring stick. That's why we only give this hotel an Average rating. We would hesitate recommending it to a friend because of the air conditioning noise issue and the strong possibility of hearing noise from outside/ neighboring rooms beside and above you.

We were in Savannah for two nights and booked the Marshall House based on several reviews. The staff are top notch, professional and friendly. The details in the room are very nice such as flat screen tv, comfortable bedding and nightly turn down service. The down falls are room size, they are tiny as are the baths. And the noise from the street is loud and ongoing at all hours of the night. Thank goodness the buses stop running by midnight but the drunks on the street hooting and hollering are at all hours. The noise level was really a major disappointment and a reason for not ever coming back to this hotel, as was the size of the room. The size of the room didn't seem comparable to the price we paid. The continental breakfast was standard fare. The cocktail reception is only Sunday - Thursday so this was a surprise when we learned that at check in on a Friday night. Never did understand why this isn't 7 days a week since other nearby comparable hotels offer it daily.

If the hotel was in another location, I definitely would stay here again but as is I would have to pass and recommend with caution to friends.

The Marshall House is a beautifully renovated hotel: the lobby and public rooms are gorgeous. Our room was also lovely. The attached restaurant, 45 Bistro, is top quality! Only caveat - we paid a higher price to get a balcony room and while the balcony was quite pretty, the street noise was noticeable all night long. Get an inner room or if possible, one off the central garden room. Very gracious staff.

Though the location was good, the queen room and bath are VERY small and there is a lot of walking noise from floors above, heating and air conditioning going on and off, and street noise late at night (and we were on the 3rd floor). The shower is a clawfoot tub with a curtain so not very easy to use for larger or elderly guests. When the valet attendant broke the mechanism on the driver's side window and couldn't roll it up during a big rain, we were called and told that the car was outside with the rain coming in, provided an explanation of they accepted no liability of putting it in the parking garage with the window down, and given no assistance with getting it fixed. I would have at least expected they wouldn't charge us for the $15 valet charge after that!

My husband and I just spent 2 wonderful nights at The Marshall House in Savannah and we were very pleased with their Southern Hospitality. After reading Every Single Review on TripAdvisor we decided to try this hotel and we were not disappointed. I am a very picky travelor - I expect excellent service and extremely clean facilities no matter what the room rate and I would rate both at this hotel as Excellent! The only negative experience we had was with the restaruant next door - 45 Bistro which the hotel had nothing to do with. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Savannah for business or vacation.

I booked 3 nights at The Marshall House, despite better rates available at other places, based on the excellent reviews here. The hotel is full of character....nicely appointed rooms with high ceilings, great location, some nice amenities in the lounge area. Check in went smoothly with very nice staff. All seemed great! Sat. morning, I woke up with my head on the bed...the pillow 'stuffing' spread out on either side of me! All 4 pillows were very soft and my friend had the same complaint. I also was awoken around 6:30 each weekend morning, with the kids yelling and screaming next door. This is NOT the hotel's fault....and I expect more noise in an old building...but it certainly contributed to my dissatisfaction. Sat night, there was a fraternity party in the courtyard. Did I mention my room looked out onto the courtyard? They were so loud, that we had to turn the t.v. up to try to hear it. It ended around 10:00, but I wish I would have been forwarned and could have gotten an outside room. The biggest dissappointment was that the maid never once re stocked the toiletries. I had to go down to the desk sun night to ask for more shampoo. We were out of toilet paper and kleenex by check out on Mon morning. Nothing was replaced. This is not what I expect when I'm paying over $200 a night to stay someplace. Each room recieves 2 bottles of complementary water each day ( a nice touch), however, our maid did not give us those either, and we had to go to front desk.

There is a nice courtyard with a complimentary breakfast. It is the same menu every day and by the 3rd morning I was really hoping for a different kind of quiche at least. However, there were several options for cereal, oatmeal, bagels, muffins and fruit.

I would have given this hotel 4 stars had we had decent maid service, but all things considered.....the noise, the pillows, the maid service.....I had to give it an average rating. I will try another hotel next time in Savannah.
