“Don't expect much.”

Fort Smith Trolley Museum
Ranked #6 of 27 things to do in Fort Smith

Museum is in an old, rundown warehouse like structure with no air conditioning. Museum is supported by donations and volunteers do the work of restoring the trollies. There was only one man there who evidentially was working on the trollies but he was very informative and knew all about the restoration process. They only had one trolley that had been restored and it was beautiful. The man made the place interesting but it is dirty and definitely a working garage with tools, machine parts, etc. all over the place. So don't go expecting much. Was happy to make a donation though as they need it to keep up the restoration work. The gift shop consisted of a few locked glass cases and I would have bought a t-shirt but the man didn't have the keys to open the cases.

The trolley rides are an adventure. We actually rode the trolley twice, with two different drivers. The first driver was more about entertaining the passengers and let two of our children help drive the trolley. The second driver was very informative and shared a lot of history about the trolley, the museum, as well as the surrounding area with us. He took time to answer questions and share some of his personal history with the trolley as well. The museum is a working museum so don't go in expecting much. We walked through a trolley car that is in the process of being rebuilt. The museum is basically a trolley station where the trolley's are fixed/restored.

Very interesting. The volunteers were very informative and explained everything well. Enjoyed the ride, but missed the air conditioning of our modern world.

Calling this a museum is a bit of a misnomer, but still, it is just a fun place to visit. Especially if you like trains (as I do) or you have kids. The Trolley Museum is a private foundation that started as a Trolley/street car restoration for historic Fort Smith. They have a trolley that has been fully restored and runs every day. It was a blast to ride a historic trolley. The driver/head man was quite friendly and told a lot about the history of Fort Smith during the ride. it was very fun. They also have several trolley cars that are in various states of restoration and you can view and board them. They are beautiful. Then, outside, they have several train cars and an old steam locomotive. You can look all around and in the train cars. That was a blast. I will go back as I love old trains. Riding the trolley was like a trip back in time. Loved it.

The tour guide was very long winded. The " 20 minute" tour lasted 2 hours. The outside trains in the yard were fun for the children to look at on the inside and out especially the dinning car. The inside exhibit was very dissapointing with only two trolleys in the process of being restored.
