I lived in Rome for much of my life and visit fairly frequently -- only recently on a visit back did I have the "opportunity" to stay here and I would never do it again!!! I'm sad to say -- stay in Utica and commute!!! My job involves overnight travel 30-45 days a year and I've had to stay in some pretty marginal places -- the Inn at the Beeches is definitely in the bottom half!
The lower priced rooms are extremely small (maybe 10'x10') -- ok for a single person, but there's so much oversized furniture crammed into the room, two people have to take turns walking around the bed. More expensive rooms (overpriced) are a must if there are two of you. The hotel is just flat outdated and needs to be torn-down and rebuilt to present day standards -- I appreciate "quaint", but this is rundown, not quaint!
The grounds/ hotel setting is very nice, very peaceful -- the hotel restaurant is also decent as is the Conference Center dining room.
I can only assume that the previous reviewers were lucky and nothing went wrong with their stay -- it's easy to like a place if everything goes well. The true test of customer service is if something goes wrong -- which is what happened to me.
On the first night of our stay, my wife put her purse on the floor and the a/c unit in our room leaked a 1/2" of water into it by morning -- completely ruining it, her wallet (and all of her personal photos, paperwork, etc... in it -- took three days to dry out her paper money). What was the hotel's response? -- NOTHING!!! -- not an apology -- not a "that's terrible, we're sorry" -- Nada! The front desk manager's response? -- "Our a/c units can't leak, go away!" Of course, none of the owners were "available" to speak with me during the three days we were stuck there (and I even went to high school with some of them!)
To give credit, a couple of the front desk people were nice but had no authority to do anything.
Over the past two months, I've called, written letters describing the problem and asking for an apology, reported them to the BBB (who has contacted them) -- end result -- NO RESPONSE -- the owners apparently don't care about their reputation!
If you HAVE to stay in Rome, this is the least bad of the lot -- for me, I'll be staying in Utica on my next trip!
