We stayed here once or twice a year over the past four while our daughter was at Mary Washington. It is clean and comfortable, no fussy B&B pretentiousness, love the Civil War memorabilia. Convenient to everything. Just a nice and stress free place to stay. We love Suite 205!

In general, the Inn at the Olde Silk Mill is a lovely, historic place and I'm glad we stayed there but I would not stay there again because the beds are uncomfortable and I felt like an environmental felon letting the water run waiting for it to get hot (they warn you "8 to 10 minutes" and they really mean it). Breakfast is very basic - just pastries, coffee and juice really. We did enjoy family time sitting out on their patio. They are a bit of a walk from the better restaurants in Old Town Fburg. On a hot day they really should check the temps in the room instead of waiting for guests to come down to tell them their rooms are 80 degrees. Staff is very nice, friendly and accommodating.

We stayed last weekend for a wedding and had a great time! The building is historic so there were not many modern upgrades but the bed was ridiculously soft and comfortable. We did have to wait for the water to heat up in the shower but not a big deal. The wedding venue has a lot character and was perfect for the wedding. The food at the wedding was delicious. The service was good as well. The only negative is that you could hear people in the hallway out side of the room in the morning as if they were in the room. But for the price of the room, the hotel was a great value! Thanks for a nice stay.

Room Tip: We had a two room suite with a bathroom in the middle. It was just two of us but would be perfect...

"This is an old building" is the excuse. I'm sorry, but I grew up in a town built in 1632 and I've stayed in hotels in much older buildings. It's no excuse to not update the plumbing so that guests get water when they turn on the tap. It's no excuse for broken tiles in the bathroom, broken, grungy taps on the sink, old single-pane windows that don't block any of the very substantial noise from people partying on the patio until all hours, threadbare towels, ancient TUBE televisions, or refrigerators that periodically turn on so loudly that they wake you up in the night.

The cheap metal blinds don't do anything to block the floodlights that shine into the room all night long from the back of the hotel, or the daylight that wakes you up so early. Room darkening shades aren't expensive. The old fashioned keys are perhaps cute, but you don't feel secure in your room when the doorknob is nearly falling off. And I've never heard floors so creaky in my life - and I've stayed in plenty of old buildings. Heck, this building isn't even that old, as the signs say it was built in the early 1900s.

Oh, and their "famous" homemade blueberry scones are a myth. Breakfast was cheap, industrial pastries, low quality bagged bagels, fruit that hadn't even been washed (still had their price tags on them), and cereal you were invited to eat with a plastic teaspoon.

Then, on top of all that, you are surrounded by pictures of confederate generals. I don't understand how in 2014 anyone can be celebrating people who fought to the death for the right to own and mistreat other human beings. Why not decorate the inn going with the theme of a silk mill? Perhaps get some nice silks, a few vintage pieces of lace or shawls, etc etc.

Why any stars? Well the staff is very nice. And the bed was comfortable, once you finally get into it (you need the skills of a mountain goat, as the beds are absurdly high). As with everything else in the hotel, the bedding needs to be modernized. The threadbare matelasse isn't charming, nor is the comforter that you know is never, ever washed.

Room Tip: Try to get far away from the stairs so you aren't kept awake by partying on the patio at night...

The Inn is centrally located and one can reach the Historic District of Fredericksburg by foot. The staff was very friendly and also the welcome mail with driving directions before arrival was comforting. Yes - it an older house - and you have to wait for warm water - but the hotel did mention that with a note in the bathroom so everyone should be able to deal with that - and at least there is warm water. They provide coffee, tea, water and cookies (good ones) all over the day and the breakfast is simple but good. My room was nice - although the mattress was a bit soft. It was quiet - but at the time of my visit which was maybe a bit off season, there weren't so much other guests. The rooms are all located at the first floor (for Europeans the second one) and there is no elevator - anyway: I would recommend the hotel and I would defintely stay there again. If you book through the hotels website you can choose directly a room.

It has a great location if you want to visit the old downtown area. It's a 15 minute walk or a very short drive. The room was clean and neat. It's very small. There was a bed, a small dresser and 1 chair in the room and no room for a desk or anything else. There was a small wardrobe to hang a few things in the bathroom. They have a continental breakfast in the morning and it's very basic. We checked in around 7, dropped our baggage off and left and did not get back until later. We went to our room and had no hot water and the desk staff had left for the day. No hot water the next morning either. We were only staying one night so we did not ask for another room. I mentioned it to the clerk at the desk when we left and very matter of factly she said, "Did you let it run for 20 minutes?" I told her I did not let it run for 20 minutes. She explained that it's an old building and because of that you need to let the hot water run for 20 minutes before you get any. Now you know. If we go back to Fredricksburg we will stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Get a room close to the hot water heater

Fredricksburg, Va is a great location for those that appreciate the creative work of artists and artisans....wonderful works at a variety of galleries (visual arts, literary arts, fine crafts). The restaurants are wonderful and the Olde Silk Inn is well situated for a pleasant walk to downtown. While not in the center of downtown, the few blocks of walking to the downtown center can be past quaint and impressive historical buildings. The staff at the Inn was pleasant and service-oriented - they gave useful tips on various happenings and places to visit. The breakfast was modest but adequate....comfortable bed and generally quiet....the value of this Inn is in its location proximity to the wonderful offerings of Fredricksburg.
