Owner description: Join the Binkley family for a trip through Alaska's gold mining history at Gold Dredge 8. Enjoy a close up view of the Trans Alaska Pipeline and a presentation about it's construction and operation. Then take a seat aboard a replica of the narrow-gauge Tanana Valley Railroad and hear the conductor tell tales of prospectors who arrived by the thousands during the gold rush. The train ride takes you to Gold Dredge 8 where you will see first-hand how the dredge worked the gold fields, then receive a brief but informative course on gold panning. Once the train arrives at the camp, you will try panning for yourself! You will find gold- we guarantee it! Finally, explore the dredge camp and enjoy complimentary coffee and freshly baked cookies in the gift shop as your gold is weighed, then hop aboard the train and return to the station.

“A train ride to Gold!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014 via mobile

I went with a group of friends and we had a blast. It was a rainy day but they provided us with a poncho. You get on a small train that reminds me of being little on an amusement ride. They have this great old local who plays guitar and sings, we all loved him. The ride is very informative of the history with demonstrations along the way. Next stop is where you pan for Gold, lucky for us they keep that water warm! Staff was very helpful. Then you weigh your Gold, I got $8 worth!!!!! Gift shop is huge and offer free hot chocolate and a delicious chocolate chip cookie.

“Wonderful Educational Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

Our group of 6 thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. It was great to see the pipeline and to hear of the history of the area. Again, I would say thank you to the family who own this excursion. They provided delicious cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. Great gift shop although we didn't purchase anything.

“Fun experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014 via mobile

Yukon Yonda is the real deal. She has a glint in her eye when she talks about gold and her narration on the little train ride is informative and interesting.
Panning was different than what I expected. It takes some finess and a lot of trust that the gold isn't just going to wash out. Seems to me that flakes are all you can get... But they are gold!
Our family of 5 ended up with $88.00 worth of gold (4other bags were purchased) and my sister, who only did one bag, ended up with the most gold. She has been called "One pan Angie" ever since.
Be sure that you go down and walk through the old dredger before you leave!
We enjoyed our time with them.

“Too little time to explore, but great information”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

It was fun, but it was rushed while there. We missed out on exploring the dredge because we weren't told when we were leaving the gift shop.

They are VERY informative and interesting, but we didn't get to explore the dredge itself because we weren't aware of when we were boarding. If we had gotten to do that, it would have gotten an excellent rating for me.

“This is a piece of alaskan Gold Rush ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014 via mobile

If you appreciate the old methods of digging gold and working with crazy simple but huge machinery, then you will be marveled by this project.

It starts with the oil rush and then gradually moves to Gold rush in a family operated Actual gold mine. The train ride throughout the vicinity is pretty nice and then the actual activity of panning gold just makes your time worthwhile.

My wife ended up getting a decent amount of gold in the actual sandpit and then we converted it into small gold pendant and inserted into her pandora bracelet.

It was awesome activity and piece of history shared together !!!

Must do when in or around Fairbanks ....
