Owner description: See the state's largest collection of gold and a mummified steppe bison, explore the art of Alaska and discover treasures from thousands of years of cultural history. The University of Alaska Museum of the North is a thriving visitor attraction, a vital component of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the only research and teaching museum in Alaska. The museum's research collections - 1.5 million artifacts and specimens - are organized into 10 disciplines (archaeology, birds, documentary film, earth sciences, ethnology/history, fine arts, fishes/marine invertebrates, insects, mammals, and plants) and serve as a valuable resource for research on climate change, genetics, contaminants and other issues facing Alaska and the circumpolar North.

“Amazing anthropology!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

If you get all the way to Fairbanks you might as well visit the museum. It has a great natural history and anthropology section that I have always enjoyed. If you like architecture the building itself is a pretty interesting design. There is an art room and Alaska history room (that I don't really care for much) and a room where you can "hear" the northern lights (to me just sounded like static). Anyway, there is a little something for everyone.

Don't forget to pull out the drawers in the natural history and anthropology room. Lots of extra cool stuff that you could miss.

“Experience Alaska Culture Here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

I have lived in Fairbanks my whole life and always find it enjoyable to visit the UA Museum of the North! It has new exhibits all the time and great permanent ones that do a great job of sharing the history and culture of Alaska. I only wish it was larger so they could display for of the artifacts they have in their archives. If you get an opportunity to do a "behind-the scenes" tour, be sure to do it. There is allot of research and artifacts hidden in the back of the museum!
