The rushing water and the snow was gorgeous. I would have loved to have gone hiking. But it was fun frolicking in the snow with my brother.

A large area North of Fairbanks with campgrounds, the Chena River, hiking trails, cabins that can be rented, wildlife viewing and very scenic. On the way to Chena Hot Springs Resort which is a destination in itself. The Chena River is very popular for fishing and floating. The river starts at Chena Hot Springs but quickly turns into a cold, clear stream as it flows towards Fairbanks. Salmon spawn in the fall. Wildlife include moose, bear, ducks, ptarmigan and grouse, different birds, beaver, squirrels and other animals. Popular hiking trails include to the Torrs, hiking along the river and hiking, 4 wheeling or snow-machining into back country cabins. The Yukon Quest Dog Sled Race goes through this area. Plenty of places to stop and look. Great photo scenes in the fall when the leaves turn.

If you have an opportunity to explore this area for at least a day, you must do it. We drove very slow so that we could spot and photograph as many moose as possible. If people on on your tail pull off to the shoulder because you want to do this road slowly. We saw two bull moose and seven cows in a three hour period. All of them were majestic and beautiful. Where else in the world could you have this unique river with bogs, with and many species of pines and firs. If we fished, I am sure this would be a wonderful area to go. Have good repellent, not that it will help with the biting flies or the giant mosquitos. A mosquito net would be a good idea on this trip. I had to get bit multiple times, just to bring me back down to earth, as this recreation area along the Chena River northeast of Fairbanks (about 30 minutes out of town) is 32-miles of amazing. State Park pass and fishing permits are required.

The Recreation area includes several campgrounds, the Chena River and ponds that are stocked with fish. I'd recommend spending the day exploring as many of these as possible. Look carefully at the waters edge with every body of water you pass. In one day we saw 7 moose, 1 grizzly, and 2 beavers. I've never fished there, but we've seen plenty of people enjoying fly-fishing along the river. It's also a popular area for canoeing and rafting. I recommend extreme caution boating in this area. The water is icy cold and log jams are around every bend.

The drive to Chena Hot Springs is always beautiful. I have always seen moose on this drive.
Another wonderful close drive is out to the Chena River Lakes district. Nice place to go for a picnic after visiting Santa's place at North Pole. I think it is about one or two exits further. There is viewing of the flood plain and some history about the flooding in Fairbanks.
