“A great place to visit”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

This lodge is real Alaska. The restaurant and bar are simply wonderful. The food is average but the atmosphere makes up for average food. Come and take a trip back to the past. The owners can also assist with information on the area and the super drive out the Steese Highweay where moose viewing is at its best in the winter.

The rooms are adequate and older. Good if you are doing aurora viewing, but other choices will provide a better nights rest.

This lodge is spelled wrong as listed here - it's actually Chatanika Lodge. Everyone has written about the restaurant but I would like to comment on the lodge. I went there to see the lodge and what they had to offer for consideration for a future visit. You enter through the restaurant and walk to the back where there is a little alcove sitting area adjacent to a long hallway with the rooms. One men's bathroom and one women's bathroom in the center of the hallway to be shared by all rooms. The rooms are very small, perhaps a King size bed would fill the whole room. One room had a double bed and a twin perpendicular to each other which was the only way they both would fit. There is an old mine (closed) across the street and this was probably a brothel over 100 years ago as the sitting area and long hallway of rooms with only the shared bathroom would have been perfect for that. The place even calls itself a "saloon". After being shown the rooms, I would personally not want to stay here. Probably a perfect sleepover stop for local hunters. I was told that sometimes the entire "lodge" is filled with Japanese tourists who come to see the aurora borealis. Stop for a beer or some grub as you visit the area, it's the only place around and I was told that it's where all the locals come to drink in the winter (only watering hole around).

Room Tip: None of the rooms have bathrooms or fridges.

Took a second trip to the Fairbanks/Cleary Summit area February 2012, and made sure to stop again (twice) at the Chatanika Lodge restaurant.

Had a delicious fish 'n' chips meal while enjoying the colorful, rustic surroundings and chatting with local folks at the counter. This is definitely a place worth seeing; bring your camera and be sure to staple a dollar bill to the wall (or ceiling, or post) to commemorate your visit.

Decided to stop here on my last morning in the area. Had a most enjoyable time talking with one of the owners, Shirley, and a couple of other local folks at the counter. We talked over breakfast, which consisted of a *very* generous serving of french toast and bacon. Be sure to bring your camera. The year-round Christmas decorations, including sparkling snowflakes and icicles, are lovely. There are dollar bills--with visitors' names from all over the world--stapled to the ceiling, walls and pillars. On request, Shirley will give you a staple gun and you can meander through the restaurant to select a place to add your own dollar bill. There is plenty to see as you walk around including loads of interesting pictures, funny signs and other memorabilia. They also have a stage; hope to come back one day and catch a show. Definitely recommend!

The Chatinika Lodge is about 28 miles northeast of Fairbanks on the Steese Highway, about 18 miles east of Fox. Road is paved entire distance. My touring family group of nine from Michigan stopped here on July 1st, 2006 while sightseeing. We had seen and heard mixed reviews but were glad we went. First of all the atmosphere was great, lots of "Old Alaska" hanging everywhere and not "touristy". Everyone agreed the food was great and the staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms available. Across the road one can rockhound on the piles of gravel, search for wildflowers or take a short walk to view a large gold dredge. Children should be supervised due to the road crossing, slippery gravel slopes, ponds, etc. One of the best meal stops we made in 10 days in Alaska. Highly recommended.
