“Dreadful”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2008

Four of us rented two rooms at the Westmark in Fairbanks Alaska through a travel agent and Holland America Line which owns this hotel. This was our first night in Alaska and the first experience with Holland America Line. The rooms were dirty, dusty, and very dated. There is duct tape holding the floor molding together. I left a note for the manager and housekeeping staff stating the rugs needed to be vacummed, the furniture dusted and the "O" ring which had fallen out of the commode needed to be removed before our shore excursions that day. Also, the bathroom walls were dirty. I don't even want to think about what was smeared on them. Nothing happened. The room was as dirty as when we arrived. I, then, contacted the manager who had a housekeeper finally clean the room. As I told the manager, I have never stayed in a hotel of this quality and that they should not be renting rooms to the public. Be aware, do not book the Westmark in Fairbanks Alaska

Stayed two nights as part of Holland American Lines (HAL) tour. Hotel was adequate, rooms were smallish and hotel was overwhelmed with several tour groups. This hotel is the HAL center in Fairbanks and as such seemed to be dominated by tours - I was told HAL owned Westmark hotels. Staff was helpful, nice feature was that the hotel gift shop sold "breakfast food" - muffins, cereal, milk, fruit, etc - so one did not have to wait for a table in the restuarant and pay for a full breakfast. Nice feature. If traveling alone (not in a tour) I would avoid this hotel during the tour season - otherwise I would stay here again.

  • Disliked — Tour crowds

We stayed at the Westmark Fairbanks as part of a Holland America Cruisetour.

The Westmark Fairbanks is a very nice hotel. The atmosphere is modern. The hotel has a fairly large restaurant and bar area, although we did not use either.

Our room was large, clean and quiet. The mattress was firm. There was plenty of hot water and everything worked. The hotel is on par with Hiltons and Marriotts.

There are lots of tourists at this hotel as it's owned by Holland America. A business traveler might want to look somewhere else (at least during the tourist season) because there's a lot of hussle and bussle in the lobby with busses coming and going.

After coming in from 'the wild' (staying in roadhouses around Alaska) this felt like the Ritz. Very comfortable rooms with nice amenities (2 TVs, kitchen area, desk/office area, upgraded bathroom feel, coffee maker etc) made us feel that the $203 per night we paid (plus $16 bed tax) was a steal. No daily paper service - newspapers sold at front desk. Overpriced gift shop. Owned by Holland America this was clearly built to cater to the cruise clients, so avoid the b'fast before 9 am as it is buffet (after 9 its a la carte) to cater to the cruise tour crowd. Big hotel, great location, easy walk to downtown sights and bus station (if you don't have a car to visit sights beyond downtown). I absolutely recommend this spot for the downtown visitor.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a Holland America cruise/tour. This hotel was very clean and comfortable. Has a nice fitness room as well as a laundry room (which we used as soon as we got there). Happy with our room.

We went to the Fairbanks Westmark as our lodging that was part of our cruise/tour. It seemed to be a fairly new 6 story hotel. We get our assigned room which is in the south tower (room 346, I think) which must have been the original three story hotel. It's like out of the 50's - small, dingy, not particularly clean looking and overall depressing. We ask the desk "why not the new tower? " They say "sorry we are (over) booked". We got our tour director to switch us to the Marriott Springhill which is new, clean and right by the park and has a great restaurant. Before we went to the Marriott we looked at the Regency which seemed to me to be out of the 60's with its decor but also seemed to be larger and cleaner than the Westmark room.
I didn't see any of the new Westmark rooms, so look elsewhere for their reviews.

  • Liked — I assume the new section of the hotel is nice.
  • Disliked — Old, dated, cheap looking rooms.

Our night at the Fairbanks Westmark was part of the land package after a cruise booked with Holland America Line. This hotel does everythig well. From its immaculate rooms and lobby/interior to its restaurant, we found it to be great. The people in the restaurant are so friendly and efficient. The food quality and quanity were a highlight of our stay. We would stay in this hotel again without hesitation.

  • Liked — Everything about this hotel was great.
  • Disliked — Nothing at all.
