We admit to having come to Barbes specifically because we are already fans of Brain Cloud, who play... read more
Our favorite group is Brain Cloud. We cannot get enough of their unique versions of oldies and high quality musicianship. This place is a bargain and a treasure.
Maybe I was expecting too much but I thought at 5pm on a Friday paying for a drink would entitle you to listen to the jazz. However, the barman went round with a bucket asking for $10 minimum donation. I'm not sure you couldn't save yourself the trip to Brooklyn and find something for this price in Manhattan. However the$9 happy hour cocktails were delicious and the jazz seemed great to me. I could see how the back room would get stuffy later inthe evening. Perhaps if you listened from the bat area instead of going into the back to see the musicians you wouldn't have to pay. Because it was small and not fancy you felt like you were hearing real music with proper fans. Fun to pretend to be a jazz aficionado!
It is the place where you can see the new sounds of the world. Small but really amazing bands. For lovers of the weird sounds also.
Decided to stop in to hear some jazz on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed a set by Triple Paste a group that played jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. Barbes is a great spot to hear local musicians and they offer Chimay.
A tiny bar near our Airbnb in Park Slope Brooklyn. Lots of locals crowded in the the tiny back room with pressed red ceiling. Brain Cloud play every Monday night apparently and they are a treat for the soul. If you are in Brooklyn on a Monday night ... go in at 7pm to hear this band. They say they do western swing but most of it seemed like New Orlean's or old time Jazz to me - but I know nothing about this kind of music except this was smooth and soulful. All musicians were great and the singer had a unique voice - a bit like Billie Holiday. We were tired from sight seeing and asked for a cocktail which would pick me us and told the barman what sort of flavours I liked and he produced something perfect for me.
This is a small bar with a small jazz room tucked out the back. I drank beer from a good selection then the waitress found me a local red on the house. As for the music... I stayed from 7pm until 11 pm and listened to three bands. They do a set and then the next comes on. This place goes till late at night. You pay for each band you see and its up to you what you put in, how much you enjoyed the band and how deep your pockets are. I was putting in around 15-20 per set for the two of us. If you get there early you can get yourself a table and there is table service for drinks...and the service is great BTW. As for the music.... I just loved the music...some of it was your classic jazz whilst others were playing their own brand of music and I was very very impressed. Needless to say I loved the evening here
