“Mermaid Parade was a blast!”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

Note: All that is written below refers to the Mermaid Parade, which is a once-in-a-year event. We arrived about 1pm, and was already extremely packed (as was the subway, and with a baby it was a long 45 minutes to downtown Brooklyn - thats why I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars). The parade was a blast – real people, enjoying themselves, having fun, communicating with each other. Nothing like the Manhattan urban alienation, more like a retro vibe to the good old, less techie days. Lots of small vendors selling fruits, ice-creams and drinks. The promenade by the sea is renovated and you can walk on the wooden planks with ease, baby-stroller included. Great fun!

“Went for the first name, not sure I'd go back.”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

We went on July 5, which was a Friday, but obviously was VERY busy with holiday crowds from July 4.

I've always wanted to go to Coney Island...now that I've been, not sure there's a reason to go back. Drove around 30 minutes to find street parking...which was about a 15 minute walk from the beach, but there's not too many options if you're driving!

The beach was crowded, but the water was good - we enjoyed swimming in it, with many lifeguards around. There were changerooms / bathrooms right on the beach. The food that was available was standard junk, and the rides were also standard fare.

The fireworks (which they have every Friday in the summer, apparently) were excellent - once they got started...they were delayed by almost an hour because of the truck carrying the fireworks breaking down on the way! But once they got going, they were awesome!

“Nostalgic and Futuristic”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

Love visiting CI and do it as often as possible. The beach is nice and well maintained. The water is nice and not far from the feel of being at the Jersey shore. Plenty of activity around the area on the boardwalk and Surf Avenue to keep it to being a total day of fun and relaxation.

No beach pass required and even late night walks on the beach are only curtailed if its took late. Just an all out good time for family and anyone with a sense for adventure.

Brings me back to the iconic movie The Warriors... CI being their home. When you get there, you will feel home too. Enjoy the people watching.
