The guacamole was super. The enchiladas (both chicken and the special of the day seafood enchiladas) were tasty and a nice portion size. The tres leche cake dessert was truly a highlight. We'll be back.

My son suggested that we go to Fonda when I mentioned that I enjoyed Mexican food, but so much of it was cloned. It turned out to be the dining highlight of a week long trip to NYC. To start with, it's small. Don't even think about going without reservations. Only 11 tables plus bar seating, and most of the tables are for two.
Loved everything about it. The intimate atmosphere, the decor, and most of all, the food. We had a couple of spectacular appetizers; duck quesadillas and a sausage and cheese queso. For an entrée I had skirt steak with mushrooms. I can’t think of enough good words to describe it. The best skirt steak I’ve ever had. Everyone at the table got something different – and no one was willing to share. That tells you something. BTW, they also make a really good classic margarita.
I get to NY about once a year. Fonda will be on the agenda whenever I go.

Fonda serves Mexican food that seems "high end" compared to most Mexican restaurants in the city. It has an intimate atmosphere that is still lively. The food is intensely flavorful, and an order of their excellent, fresh guacamole is highly recommended. They have a variety of tequilas as well, and the staff is very helpful and knowledgable. I highly recommend that if you plan to be in Park Slope, you make a reservation here.

I'm from California and grew up eating Mexican food, so I am picky about going out to eat in other parts of the country. But Fonda is not like standard Mexican restaurants. The menu is different and the flavors seem more complex. I had the chicken baked in banana leaves, which was almost more like a soup or stew. It was delicious! I also loved the guacamole and the "duck zarape" appetizers, and I am not even a big duck fan. The prices are higher than standard Mexican places, but not high for the kind of food or the area. I will definitely return.
