This place is small and crowded but has a nice vibe, and the food is simple but excellent. It is a French restaurant, and the food is French with none of the pretention that the label usually carries in the US. We live in Switzerland near the French border, and what we got here is very close to what we get in your basic family-run restaurant in France. Service was excellent and friendly. This is a really nice place for a date or to go with friends.

Dined with friends while visiting Brooklyn, just a few blocks away, on a Sunday evening. Seated right away and received excellent service and attention during the evening. Risotto with scallops was a special ordered by four of our party of six. Very good. My two grandsons ordered the hanger steak, both medium well. One was received medium to medium rare which was good, the other charred beyond well done, enedible. It was kindly and quickly replaced with a cheeseburger which was to his liking. Desserts were stylishly plated and tasty, though the blueberry with hazelnut tart should be named hazelnut hazelnut hazelnut with a hint of blueberry. Would return if in the neighborhood again, but there are many restaurants in the area I'd like to try as well since I don't get here often.

You want to like Chez Oskar when you first walk in, as it has all the hallmarks of a good restaurant - moody lighting, funky, but harmonized decor. But the service is just so, so terrible that you never want to go back.

When my party of four first arrived, there were only two tables with diners: one was just leaving, the other was slowing down on their meals and left by the time our beers arrived at our table. After we were seated, it took our server a solid 15 minutes to fill our water glasses, by which time we were ready to order. We waited another 10 minutes for our beers while our server talked on the phone, did some paperwork, and had a conversation with some guy who walked in. It was only after I managed to make eye contact with her that she remembered our drinks. We sat in the booth in the back on the right and could see the kitchen window. I watched two of our four meals sit in the window for 5-7 mins. while our server ignored it by, again, talking on the phone. The two burgers arrived, but the two soups & sandwiches took an additional 5 mins to pop up in the window, and AGAIN another 5-7 the server to bother to look. When our server DID manage to check on our table, she was curt and cold. Frequently, she delivered items to our table wordlessly - once she approached our table while actually on her phone!

The only reason I gave this a 2 star review is because the fries and tomato soup were pretty good, and I liked the Parisian circus tent vibe the place has going on. Might be a better place to go for drinks at the bar (though it looked kinda short).

I am a Brooklyn resident and went to this place Saturday night for a bite to eat after attending the Afro Punk Festival. We waited nearly 10 minutes to get seated. After that we received menus and no one paid any attention to us for the next 20 minutes. They did not even fill our glasses with water. There were other places nearby on DeKalb Avenue so we walked out and went to one of them. Very poor service.

The decor is so funky and cool. The best bloody mary around and their mussels aren't too shabby either. I recommend the mussels with a side of fries and a cocktail, I am confident they're all good!
