This could so easily have been 5/5.
If you need a washer and drier (as advertised), do check. It was "out of service" when we arrived for a 7 day stay with several days of dirty clothes, While we were offered the laundromat down the road or the owner's machine by arrangement that is not the same as putting on a wash when needed. At the end of the 7 days it was still out of service. We did two loads in the owner's apartment
Apart from this, all was great-- a very comfortable, huge bed; very quiet area; spotlessly clean; hot water when needed and a lovely owner, Fran.
Once we had understood the bizarre wifi code, that worked well.
Great location and close to subway (just avoid the drunks near Franklin) and felt pretty safe.
All in all, we would return there,
We stayed at the Emerald at the Gatling and it was a wonderful experience. We planned on heading to New York with our two kids (11,16) in July of 2014. When we found this property, we were worried that we may not be able to get in since many other properties that were listed as open, were actually not. What a relief to find that Fran and George keep their calendar current so when we sent our request in, we heard back in less than an hour that the property was available. Fran was very quick in responding to various questions that we had.
When we arrived street parking was easy enough to find. In fact, there was only one part of a day that we had to park more than a block away. Once parked, there is really no need to move as the subway is 1 block away. We were able to travel to all parts of Manhattan via the subway with our longest trip to Central Park being about 30 minutes. The C line typically gets a bad rap in the city, but we had no problems and many of the trains we were on were actually the newer, nicer trains. My wife and daughter had no issues riding back after they saw Phantom on Broadway at 10:30 P.M. There are also a ton of things to do if you would just like to stay in Brooklyn.
The property is beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice. The pull-out sleeper couch was very comfortable and my 16 year old daughter staked that out as her place. There was a closet in that area for both of my kids to put their clothes and various travel stuff. The master bedroom was quite large and had plenty of storage space. The king sized bed was very comfortable and allowed for a restful sleep to recharge for the next days adventures.
We did eat out quite often. There are quite a few good neighborhood restaurants within walking distance. There are also many smaller grocery stores as well as a couple of larger groceries in which we were able to shop for a few meals that we made in the wonderfully equipped kitchen. Everything worked perfectly. There was a washer and dryer set that was not hooked up yet, but Fran and George said that was going to happen soon.
All in all the Emerald at the Gatling was the perfect place for our family to stay. We never had to worry about anything with our accommodations as everything was great.
Fran and George were the perfect hosts. They are very friendly and took the time to stop and answer all of our questions. It was nice to also just stop and visit with them when we saw them out and about. They can offer many suggestions about things to do, see or eat in the area. Be careful! If they had recommended Dough (an incredible doughnut shop) earlier in the trip, we all would have gained 20 pounds! Thanks to them for helping make our vacation wonderful.
