We had a group of 9 adults and 10 children ranging in age from 9 months to 12 years, and this could not possibly have been a better place. The setting is pastoral, scenic, and invitingly lived-in. This is not a polished, sterile resort property, more like a long-held and cherished family retreat that you've finally been invited to after hearing grandpa talk about it for 3 decades, you can sense the generations of investment in the place. Its big and airy and quirky and if it speaks to you, you'll feel right at home in about 13 nanoseconds. This is the kind of place where you can open the windows and nap the afternoon away to the sound of rusting cottonwoods, or hit the trail for an all-day hike into the canyons of the Gila Wilderness, or ...whatever it is you like to do. The huge fully equipped kitchen and communal dining area are perfect for a big dinner party, and later, it seems equally right to soak the evening away under the stars in the hot pools or toss back cocktails while spinning vinyl in the main room. Dean is a great host and serves up an unpretentious and plentiful breakfast. The kids were crazy about the place - the hot pools, the river, the rope swings, the nearby ranches and goat farm, the cliff dwellings...after three days my kids (age 3 and 6) literally cried when I told them it was time to go home. I can't say that I blame them.
That being said, and although I love the place without reservation on my part, it is probably not the best fit for everyone. It is remote and rustic and feels that way through and through. It is a quirky, highly personalized property that folks more accustomed to standardized facilities might not be the most comfortable with. That's fine, there are plenty of places that fit that bill, but there's only one Wilderness Lodge.
